Price of Steel

Well, have you ever known prices to come back down? Not going to happen.

I've been meaning to order some 1.0mm mild steel 2.5m x 1.25m sheets, as I've been down to half a sheet for a while. June last year it was £63.75 per sheet, I've just ordered some at £38.50 per sheet. Last time I had it was May 2021, it was £37.50 per sheet then, so we're "almost" back down to old prices for that product at least.

Unusual for me - normally when I put things off, it ends up costing me more.

Plate seems to be a lot cheaper than sections at the moment. I’m paying around £1200 a ton for laser/ plasma cut fittings , with sections running around £1100 - £1300 a ton depending on what it is.
If you allow £3-400 for the processing bit then £800 ish sounds about right.
I’m getting some steel priced up later, will get a price on some sheets and full size plates

At work, we do a lot of finishing ops on some fairly 'exotic' stainless steels + others (17/4PH, inconel, monel, berylium copper etc), for downhole drilling applications. Over the past couple of months, they've had to look into whether they can get approvals to change the materials slightly, as the lead times on some of them was measured in years (these are components with a lifespan of *some* hours, we normally do a batch a month). These are for oil companies who basically, will (under normal circumstances) NEVER allow ANY change of spec once its been approved.... the world is a crazy place at the moment.....

We also had a job pushed back due to the lack of material, it seems the only place 'locally' that the boiler tubes could be sourced from was the Ukraine, and when the war kicked off, they had be reordered from an alternative supplier who i seem to recall is in brazil or somewhere in south america, lead time is 4 years iirc.....

I just checked prices on GRP resins last lot i bought was a year ago & found they have gone up a bit but not too bad at all, Makes a change!

Boiler tubes available in the uk, just had a local bod advertise some.

Sounds like aerospace, obsolescence is an absolute nightmare when customers insist the product has to be exactly the same as the one they've been buying for the last 30 years, right down to the carcinogenic primer under the paint.

Yep, aerospace, oil industry and the MOD are all very much of the opinion that once a spec has been 'approved' then NO changes can be made EVER..... I do sort of understand it, you dont want some charlie like me to say, i't'll be fine', then have a part fail whilst a few km's under ground, or 1/2 a mile up, or whatever, but there does come a point when its a bit stupid.... we do a job for the MOD, the drawing is from 1934 (i think-its defo 30's), hasnt even been up-issued, or redrawn in CAD!! technology has moved on SO far from then, theres about 20 better ways to produce the product, but theyre just not interested...... No one wants to make any decisions it seems.....

If it isn't full of cancer then is it even aerospace?

The way the chromate solution used to separate from the primer in the pot always made it look like it would taste delicious.
