just saw a bloke buying fags cheap ones £8.50 a packet I smoked 60 a day and stopped 30 years ago and had spent over 21 grand on them if it was now it would be over 9 grand a year dunno where people or kids get the money from to buy them either rich or stupid parents

I packed up smoking about 40 years ago never had one since. A friend of mine who is also retired complains about having to still do side jobs to keep him in cigarette money. We counted it up and it's about £80a week

I packed up smoking rollies in 2012 and took up vaping. The 30 quid a week (more now) I no longer spent on fags went into the workshop fund.
Out of that, I built the workshop, bought sundry tools and kit, a bike ramp and another motorcycle.

My two cents worth. About 10 years ago was at a fishing boat that had broken down. Had the race bike in the back as was going to a race meeting (road race 400cc class). The crew winged to me that i was rich in what I was doing (repairing boats) that I could afford to go racing. I asked them do they smoke, answer yes. Do they drink, answer yes. I was also informed that they play the pokies (slap machines we call them). So in short $10 per pack twice a day, drinks every weekend for three days min $50 per day and don't forget the slaps only $20 average per drinks night. Total $18000 per year, and this not to mention 'special days' celebrations. My reply was, I do six events a year, tyres for the year was max three sets , cost $1800, fuel max 40 liters by six events $300, accomodation $600 per year, entry fees $600 per year, fuel to and from the circuits $600 per year, servicing $200 per year. Total cost $4100 per year. In fact I told the boys whom were winging that they had no money, that I could completely destroy my bike every year get a new one and still have money left over. Their reply was 'oh it's not so good what we do' I at least have still something to show for my money, what do they have. Conversation stopped there.

A lot of people take it up on ship out of boredom. And its cheap rediculusly cheap 200 cigs is between $5 and $15 US. Still dont smoke though being asthmatic start coughing if i even stand near someone smoking for to long.

I pay a tenner a packet. £20 a month.....I personally enjoy a smoke . £20 a month is less that what the average bloke spends down the pub a night. Life it's self will kill me in the end with or without smoking.

Been a non smoker all my life but dont mind being around a pipe or roll up smoker at all, its the ready mades that get my eyes streaming. I also think the roll up/pipe smoker does generally smoke far less than those that buy packets.
Years ago a friend of mine would pop the "do you smoke" question at job interviews, if the answer was yes he would make it quite clear he would deduct an hour a day from their wages to compensate for the non stop fag share and breaks.

On the bright side of paying to die a bit quicker than usual, there is some serious high speed engineering in cigarette processing and packing machines. I worked for Philip Morris a nearly 30yrs ago in their UK engineering company.
