Looking at gauntlets red cow hide easy sorted, but do you guys use arm sleeves? has anyone used the Kevlar fabric ones vs the cow hide ones? Looking for a pointer or two?
I used arm sleeve while rebuilding a 2cv as I was working in t shirt as it was hot and got fed up of burning upper arm. Worked well mine was the elasticated type if I was to get another I would get the Velcro version
Winter gloves and overalls, summer gloves and sleeves, welding galv gloves overalls and sleeves. We get leather and proban sleeves at work, the leather ones last longer but they tend to be a bit warm to wear.
I don't use leather sleeves, or gaiters, or an apron because I find I get on very well with cowhide gauntlets and an old leather jacket and I don't get burned by spatter.
However, I'm glad all these things are there and can be bought for not very much and I can see how some people could find them useful. If I thought they were any use to me, I wouldn't hesitate.
If you think they might be useful, give them a try.
I never bother with an apron for welding, unless is something where i will be leaning over sharp edges or fresh welds a lot.
Sleeves, only if i'm doing overhead or into a corner where spatter bounces back. Welding haunches on rafter beams is when i wear them most.
Gauntlets, all the time for mig, but ones that have quite long cuffs. Its easy to get your wrist burned between the end of your overall sleeve and start of your gloves otherwise,
Overalls, just dickies f/r or bizweld usually more than adequate.
If i'm welding on my own, just decent quality welding gauntlets.
I normally weld the big assemblies with another welder so overalls, welding jacket, gloves and head cover. Great in winter.
The only time i use arm sleeves is welding staircases, usually in summer, when its too hot to wear a leather welding jacket - the stairs are stood on their side so the top end is welded overhead - quite a bit of spatter bounces back as virtually every weld is into a corner.
Overalls - Bizweld heavy duty FR's - 35 quid a pair and last well.
