Powering a Treadmill mill motor

After some advice ,what is the easiest way to power a 1.5hp 180vdc motor to use on my drummond lathe . There are all sorts of ways I have looked at like using a separate speed controller along with a bridge rectifier ,is there anything out there that is an all in one package .

To be honest, "just because it's lying there" may not justify the pain and effort of getting this going - I'd be on the lookout for a 230V 3 phase motor second hand and a cheap VFD.

180VDC motors are usually powered using a basic SCR speed controller.

Plenty cheap options around, or if you want something more industrial, look at KB Electronics, or Swift drives.

Yeah but I'm not sure that cheap is gonna cut it (aha!) here, unless I'm wrong.

SCR controllers have poor voltage regulation (and therefore speed) under load, which isn't going to be great on a lathe. Current limiting can be poor or non-existent, so could cause trips on start up (and you don't have soft start to help mitigate this).

i have plenty of baldor motors and the controlers kbic series but i wasnt sure on the 1.5hp

though the price has trippled as they was 50-60.00 the last time i priced the controler up

but i wouldnt use the treadmil motor id use a continuos motor instead as the baldor mortors are this type

What Drummond lathe do you have? 1.5hp could be rather over-powering it (i.e. you will reach the machine's limit before the motor runs out of puff).

That’s EXACTLY the road I went down. Got a freebie treadmill, stripped out the 180V motor and went in search of a speed controller.

Ended up with a VFD and 3-phase motor. That’s where the project stalled though. Never did get around to fitting it!

I also got an ex treadmill motor for a very small lathe, (one of the old Peatol type) I got a stepless controller of sorts from evilbay for it.. but just like Mr Miller haven't got one of those
'round tuits' as yet !

Me too.
Was going to use the treadmills control board to run the motor but it had a fault.
A decent dc controller was going to be as much as a cheap vfd so thats the route I was going to go.
A vfd/3 ph motor combo also gives you options for fwd/rev, adjustable acceleration profile, integration of existing lathe controls and emergency stop.

It was for a pillar drill but then I bought a drill with a back gear so no longer needed the vfd setup.

I've tried to find a cheap solution but I've never found anything. I've only found two treadmills which had simple controllers. One could use a potentiometer as it was a very cheap treadmill. The display on it had no relation to the motor or speed controller - it was even battery powered. It meant the speed controller was just a speed controller. The motor itself was low quality so I used one from a different treadmill. Another treadmill controller that I found was able to be wired to have an up and down speed button.
