looking for a 12 volt power supply that is capable of providing around 70 amps ish to run a seriously big car amp in my house.
Any suggestions as to where I can source or make one without breaking the bank ?
Years ago I had quite a few set ups in various cars, biggest was 4 15s and two hi phonics colossus amps. Car had uprated alternator with two batteries and split charging system and 6 power caps. Regularly metered 155dBHow big an amp are you talking? I have run big systems in cars (1.5kw rms) on a 60a fuse
Car audio in a house is do-able but not recomended. I use a 30 amp cctv one (search on ebay) for testing, and I think bigger ones are available
I used to use a PC one, gathered up all the 12v wires, all the grounds and put them into a 4 gauge terminal, then a switch between green and the nearest black to switch it on.
But if I was wanting to run it full time I would use a battery if I wanted to run a sub, if it was just comps or hi fi speakers id be trying a 30-40a psu
This is what I've been looking at, quite interestingI recently made a 44 amp supply for approx £15 following instructions on rcgroups.com. A list of server power supply mods can be found here How to convert Server Power Supplies

I had SQ set up to in a jag, MB quart front end with soundstream amps and JL 12w6, all balanced out with PG eq215x, sadly some scrotes helped themselves to my car, it was never found!I've always been an SQ person but I want to build a wall or a tunnel in a really inappropriate car
New class D stuff is very efficient, I'm only running a baby MRD300 these days, for 2 6" subs and the whole system is fed from a 4 gauge, old skool alpine 4 channel bridged for the front DLS comps and it does me
car has a decent 120amp alt from factory which helps
The only downside I can see from some of the server power supplies is that some can be noisy, so some research is required before making a purchase
No, not at all, class d mono block amps of the modern variety are just simply light years ahead of the game. If this means anything to you??? They come with sub level control, crossovers etc etc which you just don't get in pa stuff, plus also they work I. Class D which pa don'tyou would probably be better off getting a cheap power amp off ebay
