Power line WiFi

ive got the BT hotspot 600 power line wifi jobies

They worked a treat up until a few days ago

Now they have stopped working

Nothing has changed, the router is in the same place and connected in the same way and the plugs are where they have always been

The wps light works when setting them up then doesn't work

I've reset the router and adaptors multiple times

Any ideas what it could be ? Be gentle with me as I'm not good with this story of stuff

I have various ones around the house and mainly had no problems until the mains tripped with a lamp in the main room, After that 2 of them died but since we found the ring main had a break in it. All i can say is try moving them about..

I've got some, originally I thought they were okay. Over the last few months they've become incredibly unreliable. I'm going to bite the bullet and run cat5/cat6 cables.

You could consider mesh WiFi e.g. something like Google WiFi

Bought a set myself, as described above worked intermittently then not at all. Eventually binned them & bought a wi-fi extender. Far more reliable, I can use my tablet/PC right out in the garden if req’d.

Wi-fi extenders for me too, one of them also has a hard wired lan cable from the back of it into the sky box as it is the old wired sky box not the newer wi-fi type.

How big is your house (or what is it made of) that you can't get wifi in all the rooms?

We've got the router next to the patio doors and that provides coverage throughout the house and partway down the garden...

The only thing 'extra' we've got is powerline LAN to the wife's pc, and that's only because I had a pair of plugs to hand and no wlan card...

Big, it's ok in the house, mostly

I need Internet in the barn where my office is. Barn is at the end of the garden which is about 3/4 of an acre

I have a "friend" using a usb wifi adapter made by alfa...he has an extension with the dongle in a plastic battle on a pole, He says the signal is very strong..you can also get a parabolic antenna made by tp link.

This info is about 2 years old but it solved a problem for "him"

The supplied BT powerline adapters are often pants or they could be broken - if they are under warranty try your customer service centre.

In the long run I would suggest you buy some decent ones. I've got the house networked using TP-link AV500 ones, some of them have wifi extenders built in. I have good coverage & they've never failed.

What's that ?

It uses mesh networking to extend the range. But you have to install multiple nodes around the building so the data can hop from one to the other. Unfortunately each of those nodes is about £130

The Alfa cards mentioned above run at about 2w with the correct driver, stick an empty Pringle can on the antenna and point it at your router, will work for miles in open space

Run a Cat 6 as far as you can. Then all you need is a Wireless Access Point. It looks a bit like a router and in fact you can use an old router (configuration tweak required) to provide that function. That's it, dead easy to give you wireless in another location.

Ditto for the TP link units. My AV600's have been faultless for a couple of years now. For £40 you can't go wrong.

Yeah, they're similar to the TP Link units. It's probably the units themselves rather than anything to do with your router etc. How long have you had them?

when you said you reset the router did you use the reset button ? because that takes it back to its base settings,
if so you may have set the router to suit the powerline adapters, to a different subnet, I had a similar thing the other week, I rang talktalk re slow internet and they didnt tell me, that as we where diagnosing the problem----- THEY did a firmware up date on my router, from their end, which completely screwed all the settings, I had put into it. I then have another router as a switch so that talktalk only see one item connected to the broad band coz they said I had too many devises connected and were not willing to help, because they saw each of my power line adapters as two seperate ip addresses wired and wireless, then the telly, xboxes, playstations, sky, firestick kindle at least 6 phones etc etc
I spent nearly 2 hours trying to get back into it before I realized their mistake, I only use the TT router as modem and also a 5gh wireless, router I have my own 4 wireless over powerline 2.4 band adapters around the house to get coverag,e. then two wireless routers at either end to go into the front and rear gardens.
