You're right, they are galvanized, but only on the outside. When I cut it open it was quite rusty on the inside!

I wasnt talking about contaminating your food - I was talking about burning up underneath your freshly applied coating, and wrecking that.
These are normally galvanised.
If this is getting hot, fire it to burn off the zinc before putting any new coating on it.

If the smoker is staying around 100-120 degrees C, then in theory its not high enough to melt/vaporise the zinc, and the powder coating should work as an oxygen barrier, preventing the zinc reacting and oxidising under the coating.
In practice, over time the coating will still allow a small amount of oxygen through, it will still oxidise over time and probably crack the coating. No idea how long this will take - it depends on the coating chemistry.
My thoughts are, for £80 you get a nice looking coating that should last some time, and if it fails it's not a total write-off or anything. I'd just try it
