Exactly..............if you choose to pay for a cheap powder coating job, the prep will be poor and cheap materials will be used. A properly done job is in my view far superior to wet spraying in everything but ease of touching in damage or worn areas.

Doubtless there are better paints and extra treatments over or under that can improve powder
Fact remains it's far from what people expect from it
Reducing customer expectations is wise as practical as powder might be it don't beat other methods in durability or future maintainance / repair

If you are buying industrial steel where you have some control over what the vendor supplies it might be sort of OK... If a tower manufacturer told me their steel was powder coated they would be shown the door!
Even manufacturers that have control of the process from end to end seem to struggle, Mazda couldn't keep the paint on their alloys for years.. presume they are better now but I dont know.
Trouble is people advertise most consumer, automotive , decorative stuff as powder coated, as if its a big selling point, the buyer has no way of saying oh can you make sure it has had xyz process applied over an abc123 prep.. it comes as it is ... which is basically rubbish.
I'm firmly of the opinion that when someone tells me their product is powder coated I will need to budget for doing the paint again at some stage in the future.

Yeah powder coating sucks, I regularly hear on forums about folk wanting to powder coat car parts even chassis. Asking for trouble. My Sureweld MIG welder has started peeling lately but then it is only 25 years old and sat in a damp hay shed a few years.

As I posted earlier if you opt for a cheap powder coating job, thats exactly what you are going to get! Nothing wrong with the process at all, and I doubt very much it would be pretty much universally used for industrial steelwork, if it was as bad as many posters on here would seem to believe.
