Powder coating scooter wheels

Hi chaps, in the near future I will be taking the wheels of my scooter and will be having them shot blasted and powder coated, will I need to remove the wheel bearings before they go to the powder coaters. Also I have several other bits that want touching up and have looked into buying my own gun and powder but is it cost effective. Any info is much appreciated

If you're going to re-use the original bearing I'd take it out, the blasting dust will find its way in and the heat of the coating oven may cause grease to run and ruin the coating.

If you're going to fit a new bearing remove it after blasting, it will protect the housing.

Bearings have to be removed, even prior to blasting unless expendable media is being used. If you don't remove them the coating g shop will and bill you.

As for powder coating at home. Even the cheapest set up isn't really cheap. You will need chemicals to remove the original coating, and I certainly don't recommend having tubs of methylene chloride around. A dedicated oven, household should be big enough for scooter wheels. Sandblasting equipment will also be needed. A clean area to do the coating, and without a booth and extraction you will make a lot of mess. If your thinking of doing going down the diy route go for it by all means. If your thinking of getting the tackle in the hope of saving a few quid you won't.

A good shop isn't expensive, but do pay the extra and go to a custom coater as the work will be far better quality.

Remove the bearings, make sure the coater masks off the bearing housing, brake disc mounts etc.

Triple S coaters used to be good for bike n scooter stuff and they will advise on pre prep before turning the kit over to be done.

That's one reason i say use a custom shop. Even then it's shocking how many coat mating surfaces, especially where bolt holes

+1 on going to a dedicated powder coaters.....

i've just had my wheel hubs, exhaust, frame and swingarm done for me locally, came to £100 but that was through a friend, i can't complain for the price but there coatings are rather...thick... you wouldnt get that with a dedicated place..
