Powder coating oven

Hi all

Just signed up and forgive me if I have posted this in the wrong section!

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in making me a small powder coating oven? It would only need to be quite small, probably 500mm x 500mm. I make car parts as a hobby and would like to get them powder coated as someone used to do them for me but has now stopped and its something I would like to try myself.

If anyone is interested please drop me a message with a price etc.

Also, if someone has one for sale please let me know

My friend Kev had one, in the end he figured it was far more hassle than it was worth and flogged it all again and just gets it done by a specialist company. YMMV

Be careful with the spray apication. Quite a few powder coatings contain some stuff called TGIC, this is a category 1 Mutagen. Will prevent you from having kids!

Must have properly vented spray booth with air fed respirator

Have a look at this site http://www.electrostaticmagic.co.uk/ there is reference to curing methods on there and also a bit about safe use of the powder-seems you can cure small stuff with a hot air gun.

I use an old single oven, it's a fan oven which I thought could be a problem, but it's great.....although not if you're planning on doing large items!!!! Mine is fairly low wattage and came with a standard 13amp plug......would highly recommend it. I paid £30 for it and it'd hardly been used.

There are 2 guys on ebay making them, one in Ireland doing electric ones and a guy in Peterborough doing oil fuelled ones. It took me 4 months to find an affordable oven, actually recently bought one from your neck of the woods from blastcoat. Not even that big and still cost me £900, being single phase a lot of people wanted it. If you see one for sale don't procrastinate and give the seller what he wants for it or someone else will.

Do you have all the other equipment you will need? You do really need some sort of booth with filter and extractor as the powder will end up everywhere. You don't need an air fed mask, dust filtration is fine for applying powder but if your oven doesn't vent outside a gas cartridge mask will be needed if your working in close proximity.

I have e mailed someone to see if they are willing to build me a small one but £900 would be way too expensive! I have quite a bit of powder coating to do but all small parts really. I'll let you know how I get on

If its only small parts get a domestic oven. I bought a new one for £150 just for doing small parts - didn't want contamination from grease. If you think £900 is expensive for a used oven then you will need to make your own me thinks if a domestic oven is too small. My main oven will fit a bike frame in

If you only have a few pieces then I would think it would be cheaper to send it to a coating shop. What parts are you wanting to have coated?

There are 3 here that may suit, 2 from the guys I mentioned and one which was used for welding rods which has been up for sale for quite a while so you maybe able to get a good deal

I use a domestic eye level fan oven with an extension added to the front and the original door on the extension.
I was concerned that the heating elements wouldn't cope with the extension but it's fine.
I have a proper calibrated temperature gauge that I use as the cooker dial is out by 15 degrees even before I added the extension.

Thanks for the links. In answer to your question, I make parts and some people like them powder coated. I have had quotes for single one offs from some companies and its ridiculous what they charge so if I could get all I need done for a few hundred ££ then I would definately save in the long term. I dont know if I am being naive but I thought I would have been able to get a small one (500mm x 500mm) for around £150-£250
