A friend of mine has one and if he parks it for more than a day he has to have a technician out to reset it as it will not do anything. It's also had a lot of gearbox problems. They are owned by Tata now aren't they ?

Family ran various 2.0Hdi PSA engines for donkeys years and have to say it was one of the most mechanically durable engines I ever encountered. Not uncommon with the ones we had to go months at a time (sometimes one service to the next) without needing to top up the oil or water.
Usually bought at a fair age too so no real idea what they'd been subjected to by previous owners
Other things let them down though (suspension, steering and brakes on the later ones. Electrical/electronic failures on the cars).

it's been in discussion for months now and will make them the 4th largest car goup in the world. For all the castigations I hear about quality, dullness etc I come back to one simple question.
Could they be any worse than British Leyland?
That was another group of unlikely candidates smashed together with catastrophic results.
Overall though they are now punting DS as a prestige brand, a modern day Facel if you like. Citroen make some interesting things, Peugeot mostly dull but stonkingly reliable, Opel/Vauxhall sell big numbers, and with the modern FIATs like the 500 having been the decade's answer to the original Mini etc I think there is reasonable scope to be hopeful. That's if they actually do any cross platforming at all. From what I see so far it's an exercise in driving up buying power, nothing more.

Looking at the base problem.. The push to Electric cars has spooked all the big marks. The costs will be enormous, mainly because of the batteries, with all the fallout from Lithium and third world mining. So getting together makes sense. Always did. We used to diride BMC for ' Badge Engineering' i.e. same car, but with premium Name and a grill and a few other cheap upgrades? Riley Elf.. A mini with pretensions.
Same goes on now, but people don't care. The new little Jeep is a Fiat platform and so far away from the original idea, but fits in with some sort of image look. Hey, I drive a Jeep, so I am an outback 'person' who...something or other..
The real reality,is we need to use cars that we really need. Not what we fancy. So light, low powered vehicles could reduce the problem, but only if we are forced to use them, since the various cos. are still pushing hi end 'Luxury' . But only because they make better margenes on them. JLR are at the bottom of most reliability lists and that is backed up by the few I know that have them. Not minor glitzes, but 'get out and walk' problems.
If we all used transport that just got us where we needed to go, most of the world prob would be a slightly minor prob.
This turned up on a boat forum. " I have made some dosh, so I like driving a big BMW SUV." That is the problem.. One needs to recognise that one can enjoy ones 'dosh' without making the place (world) a worse one for others.
Food looks like to be on the table, so I will end the rant..

LRs are a nightmare (they always have been in my experience) a massive issue bubbling away at the moment is the cranks snapping in the 2.7 and 3.0 PSA tdv6 and sdv6 that’s in d3/4s and range rovers. Landrover acknowledges the issue in some countries where it’s been forced to but are refusing to support customers in the UK who are having to cough up 10-15k to have the engine replaced its diabolical.

A mate has a Disco (late-ish version) that he bought at auction after the previous owner mixed the fuel and wrote off (IIRC) the injection pump and several injectors.
He found it was easier to lift the entire bodyshell to replace the pump than try and get at the back of the engine.
I used to like the Peugeot/Citroen diesels of the late 80s/early 90s: we had a Pug 309 GRDT that had been to Mars and back and ran superbly, then a Xantia that was a lovely car until my gormless ex-wife ran the sump dry and it threw a rod through the side of the block... apparently all my fault because I didn't check the oil, despite her eventually admitting that she hadn't told me about this little light on the dash that had been flashing for weeks...
My current works van is a new-shape Connect with the 1600 Peugeot TDCi in it; it got to almost 50k miles before needing a cylinder head
On that basis it's within 9k of needing another one.

We lease pugs at work, the engines are great, the gearboxes would worry me if I owned one.
