My work might be looking for a new mig welder I have just done an eal level 1 and was thinking about trying for the position just wondering what I might expect of a weld test it's a hydraulic company so welding bases on tubes etc
Depends on what test they put you through. My company put us through non critical weld tests. You do you welds, they break and inspect them there and then. But if your going for full approvals then it's the full shabang, xray the lot. Normally depending on who you do the test with they will give plenty of time to practise and give you a guidance before you do your test pieces.
OK thanks I can't see these being xrayed I think you just do a test with welding foreman or old hand and see how you get on might be destructive tested but not anything else as long as I get a bit of time to practice
I used to do them as a part of a second interview.
The machine was preset to the test piece and the weld test was purely visual. I would watch the weld been carried out as well as examine it afterwards.
A big part of the test was the actual doing. I could tell a good welder before he/she struck an arc simply by how they positioned themselves like it was natural.
I had to do a multi run t fillet with a stop/start on last run, at a certain amperage, from what I gather its standard across board, I started with the earl level 1 at college, get some practice in and you will pass, make sure to get them down at 6mm
