I saw that and the tack in the top pic looks much better/shorter and will be stronger having no gap bridged from weld metal. Given its not load bearing (I assume) and there will be plenty of little welds holding it (again I assume) it shouldn't be a problem. I am always careful before I cut that stuff to size to ensure where I want to weld it actually sits on the flat nice and tight.
