Marina pickup with a Rover V8.
That's another option. No crossmember to get in the way, so they drop in quite easily, and the marina has a hydraulic clutch if you want to go manual, which I always do. I've not done one though.
My neighbour bought one new. Still has it. The sportiness stopped at the stripes and twin Strombergs iirc.

Cam was upgraded I believe plus suspension upgrades.
David Vizards daughter drag raced one that DV had blueprinted, ran 13 second quarters.

They sorta made up for it later by launching the Lotus Sunbeam, which was near enough an Avenger with a different skin.
Chrysler were bloody awful, not knowing their arris from their elbow half the time and the other half were deliberately trying to stir up trouble with the workers, some of whom took the bait.
What a way to run a company.

No wonder they had a bad reputation
I certainly did pull and replace the box on more than one occasion though, on an evening; had to be back together to use for work.
The women in the branch used to complain about oily muck under my fingernails, apparently it didn't create a good image when serving on the counter.
The Spit was at least easy to work on; for anything in the engine bay you could sit on the wheels.
