Yes the Marina was crap, but so was everything else then. The Escort was crap, but Ford did very well in rallying, and provided engines that could be tuned. The rest of the car? Well it was swapped for bits that made the engine work well.
Outside of the moggy derived front suspension, the Marina and Escort weren't that different, but look how the Ford took off.

A very successful car for BL who sold loads. Also increased the sales of travel sickness tablets. Richly deserved the name jelly mould long before the Sierra whose only sin was resembling one rather than driving like one.

I've been following Retropower's builds for a long time now and must say, in this colour and trim, it's one of my favourites. Not so keen on the orange one they are building.

There was one of the apprentices (mechanical obviously) when I started at the MOD, who thought it a good idea to fit a jack up kit to the back of a Marina 1800 coupe. So match the front handling to similar at the back, sort of balance it out?

Of the contemporary crap cars, the Avenger was the one with the most potential, in my opinion, but it never got much, if any, factory motorsport involvement.
The dead hand of Chrysler made sure of that.

I’ve still got one, taken dozens of engines out with it, last one was my son’s Mazda engine & box out about 15 years ago. I thought it really is past its sell by date, but it still worked ok. It was bought about 1970 I think.

I acquired one about 2015 to rais and lower a steel mast at the front of the house. I was impressed at how it just did it, relatively easily, but the difficulty is keeping the weight up in the air while stopping for a breather.
Since replaced by a cable winch, with stop on it.

Mine’s a posh one, it’s fitted with a brake, paid extra for that

I basically learnt to weld replacing most of the panels on father's Marina pickup.
Went to a scrapyard and cut the back off a van to use the rear floor to replace the pickup bed.
Don't think there was a single panel that didn't require attention.

Loved that truck.

They did, the Avenger Tiger. A rare thing back then, never mind now.

An common problem on Avengers was the clutch cable pulling through the bulkhead.
Many breakdown patrols carried a heavy washer with a slot cut in it.
Pull the cable back through the bulkhead, slip slotted washer on, send them on their way.

There's one that lives fairly local to you and I, it regularly appears at the Atwell museum and shows around Chippenham. that colour too.

ISTR there were two colours, but I can't remember what the other colour was.
But I probably can't remember that there were only two colours in the first place......

Not sure, pretty sure I've seen a bright orange one.

The Rootes group did fanny about a bit with performance options, the Holbay engines in the Hunters were good, the ford V8 in the sunbeam tiger was ok, Imps were used in motorsport as were the avengers. Always being cash strapped was their biggest issue.
