Possible 'amazon' scam

I just had an email purporting to be from amazon telling me I have an MP3 voucher that expires in a few days.

"Dear Amazon.co.uk Customer,

You might like to know that that you have unused MP3 credit in your account that expires on May 31, 2013. To redeem your credit, click "Buy MP3" or "Buy MP3 album" on any MP3 detail page. The promotional credit applied to your purchase will be reflected in your purchase confirmation e-mail or the order details. " With a big check your balance button below it.

Looked convincing, except there is no record of it on my amazon homepage, and I have never used an MP3 in my life. The Dar customer caught my eye at first. I was going to pass it on to Mrs C but have left it alone. paranoid?

If it's not got your Amazon registered name in it it's a scam phishing for your account numbers or passwords.

whenever you get anything like this...or something telling you to update your account security or whatever go to the site homepage directly ( not using a link) and if it is from them there will be a notice when you log in,

if in doubt as to one of emails, a quick check is to login deliberately using the WRONG login details, if the site lets you in you know for sure its a scam

I'm not saying this particular case is not a scam but Amazon do give MP3 vouchers and you don't need to be buying music / MP3s to get one - I noticed they gave me one when I bought something recently.

Just had a look - I can see no record of it on my Amazon account either but I got an email from them titled 'Your Amazon.co.uk Promotional Credit' after I purchased some software from them. Mine is for £1 of MP3 downloads so I ignored it since it was such a piffling amount!

Presumably I will get the reminder when it is due to expire?

I received a £1 credit as well after purchasing a DVD, if you purchase an MP3 track album via Amazon it deducts £1 from the total cost at check out.

If most e-mail clients didn't hide the headers by default, it'd be a doddle to see whether they're fake or not. Simple rule though. Never use a link in an e-mail, especially not any form of login link. Always go to the actual, legitimate site and check there.

Had one recently from "Paypal" for a payment of nearly £30 to Skype, if I didn't make the payment click on the link to "Pay pal dispue centre", the missing letter in dispute decided I wouldn't bother, just forwarded it to Paypal

Ive had amazon vouchers for a quid before - I spotted a pricing error on Hotukdeals for amazon a few weeks later, and got a whole mp3 album for free using the voucher....
