and priced up getting a cylinder of Ferromaxx 7 today - going to be about £170 for 1 year rental, filling and that rip-off charge for picking it up!

Not got BOC's pricing info to hand but I'm sure they work out less than that ...for the full size 'W' industrial.

The Ferromaxx appears to be the Air Products equivalent of the argoshield. Got a (slightly) out of date pricelist off our local agent today and even swapping to other cheaper gases doesn't seem to work much cheaper since they're compressed to only 230bar vs 300bar.

Might just have to hand over the card, wont be too painful til the bill comes in!

Get the portamig, you really won't regret it.

Only benefit of the AP Maxx unit was an integral reg.

That would save you having to buy a gas regulator but trouble is with those AP cylinders is that the hose fittings are unique...so you have to buy theirs + the inbuilt regulator is pre-set, with no adjustment.

Swines! Didn't realise that. Will have to speak to Mr BOC and see what he's got to say. I'd prefer to have a decent capacity but dont want to have a socking great cylinder hanging around. Thinking size Y might be good...?

im getting a reasonable price for pure argon from AP, and the fella says he will throw in the fittings for the regulator to the machine, so shouldnt be too bad

Size Y's good yes, 'half industrial' size...a decent amount of gas in + you can stick em in the boot of the car when you need to go & get a refill. One of those should come in at around £120 all up.

I'm still on that very steep learning curve. Other than knowing there was a shield gas, the course I did at college didn't do anyhting but get you into mig and practice various joints, thicknesses etc. Like most things, the real learning begins when you get out there and do it for yourself.

Must be bed time, I'm spouting cr&p now.///

Looking forward to welding everything steel in the garage into one big pile of molten scrap!

You'll have to let me know how the tig turns out. Get yerself some space and build a mutant vehicle!

Hehe, just told the missus the good news about my welder... not quite so happy now! She's asked where her present was and why I've spent her clothing allowance!!

I've tried telling her it'll save money in the long run

very tempted to turn my current car (one of the mk6 (i think) escorts) into a track car, rip everything out (including the gutless 1.6 engine) and stick in a 2 litre

mate who is a civic nut also wants a track car, so probably keep an eye out for an accident damaged one and turn it into a track car also

Hi Simon,

Should be an easy conversion putting a 2 litre zetec in. If you were to put bike carbs on a manifold on it you would be looking at about 150-160bhp without doing anything to the internals.

Silver top engines not a lot of dosh. There's usually plenty of bits (engines/carbs/megasquirts) on this forum:

Ah bike carbs hadnt thought of that! Yeah was lookin on ebay earlier really cheap for the old zetecs. Yup exact same thoughts as me, nothin inside but a cage 2 seats and half the dash

A locost is a thought for the future, very much doubt i could get insurance on one at the moment though

Ah, the beauty of kit cars is cheap insurance, even for younger drivers but you wouldn't want to use it every day especially if the weather in Bangor is anything like here!
