Portamig 235 value?

hi all,

What's a reasonable amount of money to ask for a mint condition portamig 235 in perfect working order circa 12 months old?

Sold my rust bucket landrover and fancy a go at tig welding hence would like portamig tig machine. Tough to justify two big machines.

Its never easy to tell someone what their item is worth, you just have to decide what the minimum is you will accept and price it a bit above.... BUT... if it's £100 (delivered) I will buy it and provide a bacon sarnie and coffee when you drop it off.

Ive no idea what it's worth, but I would think someone would snatch you arm off for it

i would imagine around £500 - £550 if its mint and not had a hard 12 months but thats just me.

Hi all thanks for replies. 50 quid is probably a bit too low I might chance my arm at 600 and see if anyone bites. Prob not a good time of year to be selling stuff but let's see. On the plus side it also has weld timer and reverse polarity options so would make a nice machine for someone - a bit cheaper than a new one.

I'd say realistically £400.
This unit is £700 new so £600 for a year old is optimistic. By all means best of luck but for the sake of an extra £100 I'd buy a new one and have a full warranty.

The other thing you need to remember is that most people looking at your machine for sale will be VAT registered . Because it's a fuse rating of 32 amp it's more than likely going to be bought by someone with a business/premises. So that £700 new machine becomes £590 when they have claimed there vat back making it cheaper to buy the new one than your used one at £550-£600. It's a grim old world but like I say £400 should be roughly what it's worth.

it's probaly someoe like me you'd be trying to sell to.

in that i'm not vat registerd, but have a workshop thats quite well setup ( or i'd liek to think ) thats unfortunatly stuck on singel phase. and uses it for a bit of automotive and light fab work.

235 Amp ish is around the size of machene i chould be tempted replaceing one of my older worn migs with. problem is even tho i'm not vat registerd if im useing it for work that £700 new comes with a warranty and an invoice for my accounts so again that makes a new one less expensive than it first appears. and also it proably arrives to my workshop door for that.

if it was close and very tidy i would probaly go to near the £500 mark if i needed a machene and was a bit short on cash. but as said more like the £400 area. as the other issue is needing a cash buyer quite a lot of stuff gets bunged on finance. on principule for my hoby stuff i hate finance but as soon as it work relted it makes sense.

also when not feeling skint 235A is £600 second hand unwarranted 330 amps can be had for 1K new but as allways with me i get greedy at that point and am pritty much garanteed to spank £1600 quid on a 400+ amp machene with remote wire feed

Plenty of Portamigs have been sold on here over the last few years.

Not many in your size but should give you an idea of the % of new price they sell for.

A 235 amp mig and a Tig welder don't really overlap welding wise. If you have the money, try to retain both. I think it is justifiable if funds aren't really critical. If money is really tight then you are taking a big hit financially in order to change.

I have decided to keep the mig, i would probably let it go for 600, but 400 no way. Having cost me £800 (not £700) I feel 600 is probably about right for a mint lightly used machine.

I will probably just downgrade my tig machine and get a thermal arc rather than a portamig and save a bit of dosh that way. Plus a thermal arc will be a lot easier to hide from the missus

You do right, you would probably regret selling it, I sold mine because I stopped doing work for others and could manage perfectly with it's smaller replacement.

I would have valued yours at £550 as a good buy for someone, £400 was way too low and less than I sold mine for which did not cost as much as yours new.

If you do sell I hope u get £600 but it's very unlikely it's worth that seen as the new one with a years extra warranty is £98 more.

It's very hard to value anything accurate. It's only worth what someone is willing to pay.
I've seen machines go for 90% of there new price and on another that same machine in same condition went for 60% of the new price. It's about where when and how it's advertised that will make the difference. As said again. I wish you the best of luck.

I think the £700 one is the standard model not the one with the weld timer and reverse polarity options, they are unless I am wrong nearer £800.

Even at £800 once you take away the VAT it's £640 so your asking top notch for it

Correct. Reverse polarity / weld timer / large roll of lincoln electric mig wire = £800+

Re the vat thing it wouldn't be my intention to target people who are vat registered, more a machine for private individual who is restoring an old car or similar and wants a quality bit of kit.

Anyway it's a moot point now as I've decided to keep it. I would only regret selling when I buy the next old wreck anyway
