Hi everyone, I own a 1982 T25 vw camper which has started to suffer from rust in all the usual places, seams etc. About the time I bought it I invested in a SIP migmate turbo 150, basically to learn how to weld with and to tackle the bodywork on the van.
I soon however found more and more welding jobs, eg exhaust on my wife’s car fell apart, my own exhaust blew a couple of holes. Then I upgraded the engine and had to fabricate an exhaust, for the new engine. All in all the welder paid for itself very quickly, if anything about four or five times over. I now wished that I had bought a better quality welder, as I was starting to enjoy this new hobby, and knew a bit more about the whole thing.
I then found this website, and after watching on ebay for ages and losing a few auctions for questionable condition welders, I resolved to upgrade to a Portamig 211.
The rationalisation being that if I sell the old one for about £60, the new one will pay for itself very quickly, as I still have tons of welding to do, and I will be left with a seriously good bit of kit.
I received the 211 today and have fired it up, and made a few practice runs on some sheet metal. I was instantly impressed, I wish I had bought this machine when I had started out.
1. Learning to weld would have been far easier.
2. The welds I have already done on the van would have been much higher quality.
I am really looking forward to getting to know this machine, and I’m pleased to have bought a British made product from a reliable and well run supplier (Weldequip)
I will post again when I get to know the machine better.
