Polybushes

I am looking for polybushes for my passat but i can only find the full kit at 313 quid.

I would prefer to just change the front inner wishbone bushes 44bc but n9thing is shown on ebay.

Anyway i though as i have lathe why not turn my own up.

Does anyone know what material they are made of?

Don't be tempted to make them out of Nylatron or any of the other hard plastics. You will feel every little ripple in the road (speaking from experience).
You need some polyurethane but I have found you need to grind it to shape, on the lathe mostly. The 313 pounds for the full set will start to look like a bargain if you try to replicate everything. Cant find polyurethane on there...lol just my luck.

It will, but the stuff is very soft in engineering/machining terms. Like trying to turn Play Dough. If the machine can go fast enough, 10,000 rpm and up, you can turn small seals with a degree of ease. It needs to be either cast/molded into shape or ground with the toolpost grinder. Just getting a hold of it has it's own set of problems. Get a bit of rubber and try turning that.

Ah i have a tool post grinder. but as you say getting hold of it seems like rocking horse manure..

This is looking like a non starter.



Even if 61mm is big enough the price is silly money. Looks like 55 quid from Euro car parts or rubber bushes at a tenner.

Superpro from memory have a section on their website listing bushes by size. You should be able to get something as an individual bush that fits? It worked for me albeit I had to make some custom sleeves.

I made a bush from polyurethane once...it was a total nightmare to turn on the lathe

Super pro bushes are so much better Then cheap poly bushes they are a better material and have groves to hold the grease

Where do i find a supplier and price for those mate....everything i look at seems to go up in price. Lol with camber adjustment vat and delivery etc....arrrgggg.

You need to slice poly on a lathe, not turn it with a tool used for metal.
Grind a very thin parting tool like a upside down knife and it will slice like butter.

Problem is the raw material.cost almost as much as a set of bushes...lol.

You could try using boat trailer rollers, they should be much cheaper, as an example;

Although this is from an Australian site you should be able to locate some where you are. In boat trailer rollers, there are different types of polyurethane, stay away from the blue ones as they are rock hard.

I made some spacers to fit my Jeep for the airbags I had using 2 pack Polyurethane, I had put new springs in it and there was still a 20mm gap that I had to fill between the bottom of the air bag and the spring. I had to heat the mixtures up and then vacuum the mix to remove air bubbles after mixing and then pour into a mold, coated with a special mold release oil suitable for the polyurethane. Once you mix the 2 components you have only about a minute or two before it it starts to gell and thicken.(at least with the type of urethane I was using).

As there a heaps of different type of polyurethanes with different densities/properties, you will need to ensure you get the right type. Also the raw products are not cheap with some having a minimum qty to buy. So by the time you get the raw products and mold oil, make the molds, rig up some sort of vacuum system, you would be reinventing the wheel so to speak and not save any money in the process.

If how ever you get some red flat trailer rollers and machine them you might save some money that way. Be aware that the smallest hole in these rollers is about 17-18mm.

I tried poly bushes on my Rover SD1 Vitesse - too soft - so I used rose joints everywhere along with lower springs and adjustable konis. The car was incredible. Bumps were fine - but potholes really hurt. Then one day I hit a bump and the driver's window vanished! I thought it had smashed but it was down in the door. The door skin had torn with the impact. I had to pop rivet the motor back in place. great on a track but a bit harsh for the road - great fun though. I have never driven a car since that went around corners so well.
