Used for paint / rust / rubberised car underbody sealer that usually smears

Wish I had discovered them years ago

I'd better not start backing them with a worn out 1mm so I can face the locking nut in and get a couple More mm out of them

The best thing we bought for our car restoration was a Black and Decker power file. About £40. They will strip rust and paint easily. They will also grind down welds. The blue zirconia belts come in various grit strengths so you just use the one most appropriate.

I used them on scooter panels but I found they do leave marks on aluminium parts that need a good primer to fill them in.

I use them on steel and find they are great at removing rust and paint and not thinning the steel like sand paper / flapwheels / grinding discs

I've been prepping an old steel barrier prior to painting & I've been using a mixture of abrasives on it & here are my findings.

For stripping old paint the poly discs are fantastic as the paint clogs everything else. They also removed very light rust but struggled on mill scale. But they just dissolve if you try stripping a corner!

For most of the cleaning I used a 40g ceramic flap disc, very versatile & fast but leaves gouge marks.

I used blue sanding discs on a grinder & backing pad to blend out any gouge marks & leave a nice surface for painting. Nearly as good as flap discs but once the outside edge is worn you need a new disc. The flap disc lasts a lot longer but cost more.

For deeper rust I had to use a standard grinding disc followed by some blending.

I was using the Dronco JETzirkon J-AZA flap discs & they are fantastic! Cost a little more than other flap discs but last much longer & continue cutting right down to the backing pad. The only downside is that the backing pad has plastic in it & will leave marks on the steel as it melts! Time to adjust your angle or fit a new disc!

What’s best for stripping without taking metal off?

Depending, I did a load on a boat with a big heating torch and a wire brush. Wouldn't do that to a classic car though

used to use ioads of them back in the 80s , 3M were the only manufacturer at that time , but they were on a mandrel for a drill, manily used for stripping cathodic primer off new panels in prep for spot welding, also handy when a fibre disc couldnt get into the wrinkles of a dent to apply a pin for dent pulling, costly at that time if you hit a sharp edge ,they were good and did there job.

Polly discs are good providing you don't use them like a grinding disc. I use them all the time for my paint stripping and general rust removal. They don't like corners thoe. But like anything if you press down to hard on them then they will not last long. And some makes are better than others.
