Hello and welcome andy,
Not metal related, I have been refurbishing some of my old favorite watches, a couple of the early 1970s digital Seiko's, I have stripped and repolished the stainless case O.K. (removing dings and the odd little balls of welding spatter) but i am having great difficulty with the mineral crystal, I have removed about 90% of the scars but now need something that will repolish the very hard flat mineral crystal, Any suggestions please,

Polishing jewellery

Hello Gordon

Stone polishing is not one of my best subjects.
After consulting our polishing manual I found that you
could use dremal with a dental soft calico mop and rouge
polish .

Thank you for the prompt reply,I have tried the Dremmel with mop etc to polish the glass but the grinding medium does not appear to be hard enough to lap out the final scratches,

Dimond lapping compound

that a dimond lapping compound, followed by some polishing, might
do the trick .

Hey this is cool,

Nice to meet you andy, and I think we should have a thread on which everyone could get their skills up they could offer other people.

Going to sound strange but I've been looking for someone to polish some metal for me, about 40~60 x 120~148mm discs on both sides to a nice mirror finish for a test of a tesla turbine I'm trying to build, I've not got all the metal yet because I'm looking for a laser cutting service who can cut them out for me, they would be made from 1mm Stainless steel.

Is that something you could under take for me using your machines, again it's not now but would be within the next few months when I've worked up funds for the metal and cutting process

I made a small dust collector with a vacuum attached but it still leaves a mess.
I don't have much room and I need to take it apart or remove in minutes etc so that I can do other work etc.

Really depends what you are polishing, If you are doing ally then no extraction will ever keep you or your workshop clean from the flying debris and dust. The centrifugal force of the wheel flying about at 2800 rpm is to much for any extractor. Extractors are only really a token gesture of removing light dust with heavy polishing such as in ally.

The best you can do is make a decent hood for the the wheel covering as much of the wheel as possible, but then a hood is often very restrictive if doing larger parts.


What you are doing now is about as good as it will get the only real exception to this is doing light polishing such as jewelery where you are not using heavy agressive mops such as sisal.


I run two polishing set ups at my works one with a full blown factory extractor unit and sadly there is no real answer to solve the problem. The only other option if you have the space is to make timber framed room as a polishing area and get out the staple gun and totally sheet it in polythene off the role type stuff. You could always make such a construction on the side of a shed or garage if space allows so its out the way.

Always make sure you are masked up propery when polishing.

Thought you had to be careful on aluminium dust extraction - can become explosive compound and should run through a water filter.W/A
