Sometimes gates aren't needed to serve a practical function (keep intruders out, keep the dogs in etc) and are more just decoration, I suspect the Albert Paley gates are in that category. I've certainly made gates/rails that fall into that category and serve no function other than to fill a gap in a hedge or a wall round the back of a property where there's not been any functional need for load of bendy metal. If there has been any purpose to them it's just to mark a visual separation of space - garden into field, patio onto lawn.
