Thames Valley definitely used to, I knew a FAO who would be called out to such things fairly regular, cows, bulls, big dear etc - They didn't do tranquilisers, the outcomes were nearly always a bullet, but humane compared to the stress of being rammed consecutively by a vehicle...

The Met on the other hand would probably treat animal or human disturbances in the same way, fair play.

i was in a field with my lurcher there was about 15 young bullocks came bombing towards me just stood my ground . they got withing a few yards and just stopped . they were just curious and a bit lively sometimes they run that fast they cant stop in time and you just have to dodge to one side or get trampled on

Beef cow and calf is most dangerous. This is just a step up from the calf with no mother in sight. Bulls are often docile but you wouldn't want to wind one up!

Interesting that it was a police pickup - that normally suggests it's the 'rural' guys so more likely to have had handling training!

It would have been your dog they were interested in not so much you, I walk my dog down a path regularly beside a field with cows, my Jack Russel has her nose through the fence and their noses are right down at hers from the other side, after a lot of sniffing on both sides we walk on, they’re not interested in me.

Doesn’t surprise me in the slightest, police and livestock never mix. Police “marksman” missed a mates bullock twice from about 100yds when it got onto the motorway. Have dealt with some police who will just control traffic while you sort the beast out, but had others who have to be in charge with a wealth of amazing ideas the will never work in a million years and try stuff like above.

We got in an incident today with bullocks. A tent pegging team were practicing on a field used previously for an event, I'm not sure if the farmer had given permission for to them this time as the gate to adjoining field was open with bullocks in, around 30+, and sure enough they came into the bottom field where they were.
My wife and I were walking the dog and seeing them enter the bottom field went through the style into the top field now vacant of bullocks. My wife is really afraid of cows to the point of being hysterical if one comes near her. Anyway walk was going well and from the higher ground got a good view below with the tent pegging and bullocks which kept coming up to where they were practicing. Coming down the field to the gate I couldn’t believe that they were chasing the cows off the field with cars, horns blasting, straight towards us. I turned us towards the style we’d come through but it was over 100 meters away and we were a lot closer to the gate. I told my wife to walk fast straight to the style whilst I hobbled along with my knackered knee holding the dog. The bullocks soon caught us up and now a few meters behind us so I turned and shouted “whoa” at the leaders of which there was around 7 in a row with the rest tight behind them. The dog thought it was great and tried licking one that caused it to jump back creating excitement in the herd and little charge forward but another “whoa” stopped them again. This was repeated numerous times with them just a few meters behind continuously jostling with each other until I reached the style and my panicked wife waiting on the over side.
Walking down the lower field to get back home another dog walker waiting at another style couldn’t believe what she’d seen first from the group tent pegging chasing the bullocks to me getting surrounded by them expecting the worse had started to call 999 until she’d seen me come through the style.

You would have thought the tent peggers would have closed the gate with the bullocks now in the top field but didn’t. The bullocks having spent a while at the style I’d exited through turned back around, though the gate and into the lower field straight towards the tent peters again. We were at the opposite end by then and ready to exit the field whilst the bullocks charged towards the tent peggers.

It did make my butt hole twitch with so many over excited bullocks after been chased by cars, being so close to me but I just thought get the wife a safe distance away, keep walking and make sure the dog is under control.
One young cow on its own should have been easily contained by the police and definitely no need to hit it so hard with a truck.

One here a few years ago, a bull was being loaded into a lorry and escaped into some fields next to the local park, was shot by a police marksman.

I think they had been chasing it for hours in cars, why didn't they call for proper help? Very poor and I can't believe you approve the way it was handled

The little experience I have with neighbors cows.....when they get out, they know their out, and start to act unpredictable.
But they wouldn't harm a person.

There was a recent 24 hours in A&E where a herd trampled a woman walking her dog.
I don't condone him ramming the calf but we don't actually know what it had been doing.
As as been said . Not sure what he wanted to achieve ( more interestingly) why other than killing it.
Having lived in the country and had relatives with farms livestock are like dogs. Occasionally you get a Rogue one.

But in the 21st Century and with all these fire arms departments you would think tranquilising guns would be readily available.

I don’t know the circumstances surrounding this case but if she was walking her dog through a field of cows not on a lead with very young recently born calves then maybe she made a stupid mistake if the dog was off lead and worrying the animals (the general public are as thick as mince don’t forget if they’re not used to country living and coming from the outside) , they must have felt very threatened for that to happen and it’s certainly not normal behaviour for cows, there are two sides to every story.

News channels are not showing the full video, but I feel everyone needs to see, as it was pure unnessasary cruelty.

Hope he gets locked up for it and taught a proper lesson. More likely he will be rewarded. At the least he should be done for speeding as he appears to be using excessive speed without blue lights and the rules state they can only use speed with lights.

I'd suggest they could have got a vet with a tranquiliser, would have been a better option - given they are said to have been following it for a reasonable amount of time.

I've grown up on farms, milked cows, talked them along, have time for them as creatures. But, not 12 miles from me about a year ago, a " steer", no doubt miffed at being dragged from its green field to be sold at auction, took to its heels and made a run for it. Eventually it was shot, but not before it ran past my local doctors surgery and killed an old boy doing nothing special but enjoying his day.
So before you all go gooey about the pie on legs, take a minute to think about what one of these are capable of, when out of control...

Well it didn’t look out of control to me, but going by your theory it could have done so yes just shoot dead any animal just because it might go out of control.

Cattle are always curious. This one looked confused and excited. They are heavy old lumps and are clumsy. The way to deal with any animal like this, unless it has big teeth and claws and is a carnivore, is calmness and not yelling at them, which will not help at all.

The c**t driving the Police vehicle should be strung up preferably, and fired with no pension as a minimum. No need for that at all, absolutely shameful.

The more one sees and hears about the Police makes me despair. More "lessons will be learned" sh*te no doubt.
