Ply lining a van

Okay chaps and chapettes.
I've got me a new vehicule - Citroen van. Nice thing, runs lovely, BUT it's not ply lined and has no bulkhead, so it's a bit noisy.

Any suggestions re ply lining etc? Best way to fix the ply, any other things to put in to quieten it down, any other helpful boons and tips?

Buy the kits is the easy way. Self tapers is normally good enough, dont usually bother piloting unless its a thick bit or double skin.

Large head pop rivets work a treat aswell, ideal if you've an air riveter.
To stop a bit of the squeak, a strip or two of self adhesive foam stuff, like draught excluder does the job.
Under no circumstances, fill the voids with expanding foam
Bulkhead, depends on what you want. I have a ply one, with a window cut in it, ideal for poking stuff through if you cant be bothered tieing it on the roof.

hi,

thin ply held by self tappers into ms, with some fibre glass roof insulation behind it.

To make the bulkhead 'safe' you just need some brackets and maybe a centre-vertical rail to attach it to. I'm sure that someone with your skills could design it very quickly.

If you've got a centre rear-view mirror then cut a hole in the board and fit a bit of pespex, etc, but you could have guessed that!

If you don't fancy glass fibre then some years ago cheapo houses were built with something that looked like egg-boxes inside the internal walls to deaden the sound.

make the base out of half inch ply and the side walls out of 1/4and box wheel arches out of half inch . screw the side panels to the ribs with self drilling screws get some 2 x1 to stiffen wheel arches upmake cardboard templates up 1st then draw round on ply then cut u could insulate behind side walls but i dont think theres any need

Thanks guys. Hitch, your bought kit plan is a winner, I've already found a couple at £115 - worth the money I reckon. I'll not put in a bulkhead, as it'll suit me better. Might see about picking up (or making, Peter), one of those bar affairs for behind me head.

I made a weldmesh bulkhead for someone sometime ago, fixed lower ply panel, and hinged mesh on the top half...to poke ladders, sheets etc through Maybe an idea...? personally i think bulkheads are a must.

they are a must had some step ladders rested over pasenger seat with a big roll of 6mm cooker cable sat on them. ran in to the back of a car at 40mph the cable was launched through the windscreen and smashed the car in fronts rear screen apart from wrighting it off so i always have one now

Just done out my new sprinter with a kit bought from ply lining services i think it was , good quality and it all went together as it should . I would go for a timber or steel bulkhead if only to keep prying eyes from seeing whats in the back

Use a short drill to do the holes for the screws. If you are pushing and it goes through quick you can put a bump on the outside of the van which is very annoying (don't ask) I also did a weldmesh guard for my brother in laws after a nearly with some building materials in the back coming to visit him in the front.

Might want to have a look here for sound proofing behind the ply lining - stops the panel "drumming"

older renault masters came with a driver protecting bar/mesh cage as standard. Ive got two of them in now (one from lhd one from rhd ) and besides being good protection for the cab in terms of stuff sliding forward in a crash, theyre also a great place to bungie things to. If its a bigger citroen, maybe the equivalent model renault comes with them as standard, as the bigger vans are mostly the same van with a few cosmetic changes between renault/citroen/vauxhall etc
Doesnt cut the noise like a ply bulkhead, but my vans a lost cause in that respect anyway and I much prefer to be able to jump in the back through the gap between the two single cages...
