Yes Gaz that would be ideal. We shall see. Don't want to cut into my table for the pulley and belts but would make it safer.
Making progress.
From what I can gather one end of the shaft needs to be free floating to allow for expansion. Is that correct? Means all longitudinal thrust is on just one bearing. Perhaps @Brad93 , @minimutly or @pressbrake1 or anyone else familiar with such things can help?
Bush not in pulley yet. Also need to put small riser blocks under the bearings.

Yes just one collar, in front of the back bearing. I gave the height of table some thought - I think I might be tempted to make a ride and fall, on a long lever with a stepped locking mechanism, so that it would accommodate all different sizes of timber?

They've all been cut to roughly that size as it is what fits in our fireplace.
Sadly I recognise that lump, came off a dead tree down our drive.

Mine is fixed at both bearings, but allowance for expansion does make sense. I was using it yesterday, and the cone got too hot to touch. I don’t think you need variable height - firewood length doesn’t vary that much. You’d have to make an adjustable riving knife as well.
You might need a bit more projection of the cone. A large, stubborn log might not part properly before it hits that front bearing.
In use, a lot of splintery debris gets pushed to the back, so make a shield to stop it getting into the pulleys.

I wanted it close to reduce force on the shaft. Saw one chap bend the shaft upwards on his YouTube video. Mind you his projection was excessive. I also wanted the cone tight against the bearing.
One useful design had 2 bits coming off the riving knife at 45 degrees each side to force the log apart easier. Seemed pretty good. Can always weld on later.

. Next time you come up the drive on the left hand side about 3/4 of the way to the lawn you'll see the stump sticking out of the bank. It was a rapidly felled tree before the stump got covered with diggings from the drive (had been dead since I'd moved in).Few hits with an axe should sort it but as you saw last time I'm deceptively strong.

Just had a measure of mine. The tip of the cone is 325mm from the front bearing casing. Shaft is 40mm diameter, and there’s about 70mm of stickout before it enters the cone.
More importantly, I think, looking from the top, a straightedge laid along the cone threads clears the front bearing mount.
I have used one with those 45 degree ears. Again, on a stubborn log, I found they forced the split faces off the thread, so the log would stall. Pull back to try again, and the threads would re-engage and drag the log to a stop again.
However you build it, it’ll be fine for 95% of the work; it’s the b*stard logs that will test the design and take up the time.

Hmm, actually, given you're splitting then vertically yes they should.

Your not trying to hold sub thou, no high speeds to build up heat , no cutting tool etc etc
You do have bearings that dislike too much axial load so I’d have two collars
