I need to weld a floor to my kitcar chassis. The chassis is 25mm tube 1.6mm thickness and the floor is 1mm steel plate. Would plug welding be a good solution ? If so, would 7mm holes at 40mm gaps be ok ?
You say tube..........square? should be perfectly ok, maybe a little closer together and make sure you seal it well after and maybe prime it first weldable primer would do nicely.
It should be alright at that but 1mm sounds a bit thin and may stretch a bit, put plenty of braces across it and make sure it's clamped up close while you weld it. I attached my 18g floor with short runs inside and outside the base of the tubing. It doesn't have to be welded you could stick it on with Sikaflex and pop rivets. I didn't prime mine first I just used seam sealer (Sikaflex actually) around the joins before painting and it was fine for the 8 years I had it on the road before it went.
I used to use sikaflex when i had a job erecting sileage tanks on waterboard sites, the tanks are made up of 8'x5'xanything upto 10mil thick stainless sheets coverd in glass coat....heavy! The sikaflex was used to seal the sheets together as apparently its the only stuff that doesnt get eaten away by all the crap/sick/toilet roll and chemicals used for the cleaning process oh and it sticks to your hands like ****e to a blanket!!
We fastened some aluminium bulkhead panels on my mate's MK just with sikaflex and they were too thin. He decided to use some 16g and we had to destroy the old ones to get them off they were so secure.
