Plates welding on exhaust

Hi all,
I have to weld some reinforcement plates on a 304SS exhaust manifold, 50mm OD, 2mm thick, as it is on this pic, both on the turbo flange and on the head flange:

Have access to a very good tig welder with pro equipment, but I'd like to have tips from this forum to guide him to have a reliable work.

hardly a difficult task

if he is very good / pro welder with decent kit you may find he'll take offence to being told how to do that job.

wouldn't suprise me in the slightest if he hands the torch and filler wire to you, i would

Ah ah, he is a very good friend of mine and he usually welds industrial machines, mainly ss, iron and aluminium ones, but none of them suffers of extreme heat and pressure of a race turbo engine, so he is wise enough to accept any good advice

Bracing turbo manifolds by welding gussets to 'em typically makes things worse IMO... the extreme heat cycling = expansion and contraction. Restrain the manifold with plates and the expansion/contraction stress is, at best, moved and at worst magnified

A better way is to support the (presumably bigger/heavier than stock) turbo is to take a cue from the way F1 did things which was also used on the Sierra Cosworth and known as a turbo damper because it's role included damping vibration which can lead to cracking things/breaking studs

I fitted a supercharger to a friends car the other weekend. The charger itself was in bits (ie the manifold, throttle body attachment etc), the lad I was doing it for decided it would be a good idea to show me a you tube video of how to assemble the unit and torque bolts down. As you say I laughed and said "There's the tools pal, crack on". He soon turned the video off and shut up

I'll assume he's not welding it while it's racing. In which case it's no different from any other weld

Hi hotrodder,
the turbo is already well supported with 3 brackets (turbine/compressor/exhaust manifold).

What I was looking at was how to make a more reliable twin scroll manifold, in particular at the turbine flange where the twin entries will expand and contract in a different way.
I do knew that that kind of plates would have weaken the manifold, but then I came onto this Megatron F1 exhaust manifold and saw that plate, so I rethought about it.
I mean if THEY do something, then it must be a good thing...

I meant any "special" rod, or solar flux, or...
