Plastic Cyclonic dust extractor & set up for wood shop machines

I've spent 10 or so hrs. looking , reading .& thinking things through . If it's too small for our mens shed I'll be using it at home .

Decided to go with one of these dual cyclone extractors they appear to catch the microscopic dust and can be run off a scrapped /repaired house hold vacuum cleaner .
I'll be making the air inlet chest out of 500 mm of 100 mm soil pipe and be using smooth internal bore wire reinforced pipes so I can earth out the static on all pipework etc .

Has any one got anything useful to say to deter me from this £30 or so purchase?

Has any one got anything useful to say to deter me from this £30 or so purchase?

Is that primary cyclone a little on the small side?...can't remember dimensions for the one I had but I thought it was quite a bit taller.

22cm seems quite small...I guess if it works ok then doesn't matter.

The tubes are 50 mm ...2 inches not 22mmm????
Height approx. 50 cm when fully assembled as the dual extractor ,
It will be sitting on a 2 inch thick wooden lid sat on 30 gallon plastic plant pot /tub that has a sturdy rim . I will be cutting a witness window in the lid so we can see when it is filling up but the plan is to empty it every Friday at sweep up time .

In HMF the secondary filter .... dust cyclonic separators on NBC enabled vehicles were much the same size back in 1966 it's the speed of the incoming air and the vortex shape that flings out the crud , I watched a few videos of thse dual jobbies ,,, seems worth a punt for the shed at that price .

What are you using as the sucking device? Are you going from 2" to 100mm soil pipe, if so I dont think it will work very well. If your using an extractor with 4" then going to 2" and back to 4, Thats quite the restriction and will affect the flow. Systems like similar sizes throughout them, with as few sharp bends as possible.

On the first version of my cyclone separator I used a small plastic food barrel as the tank. On first use with my Festool extractor it sucked the barrel flat! I'd advise you to use a steel barrel as your tank.

Looking at your plans to use this to cover several machines I think you'll need a big twin motor industrial vacuum as a minimum to provide suction. A henry, etc will not have enough suction or flow to do you job.

At my last Men's Shed we had one of these.

We used it on a table saw, chop saw & a planer/thicknesser, swapping the hose to each machine as needed. It worked really well & we are looking at buying one for the shed I'm at now. It has a basic cyclone above the waste bag. There are cheaper versions around with less flow & without the SIP badge but essentially the same machine.

I recon the unit in your photo is the same as my extractor. Made in the same Chinese factory, except mine has axminster stickers on the side and yours has sip stickers!

I have in mind that I paid £150 (used) for mine.

Managed to acquire a 300 litre poly oil drum where the lid has be carefully sliced of ( got the lid as well ) to make the sawdust collector tub /barrel .
I hope to route out a 2 inch thick wagon wheel rim to put over the cut rim to make a quality sealing ring so that I can sit the cyclone base mount plate on it .

I'll be making a simple trammel extension for my router so I can not only route the circular rim but to also put a groove in the ring so I can silicone it over the cut rim of the barrel for an air tight fit .


Havin g read countless posts and comments about people making their own cyclone it's readily apparent tat any air leak into the collector barrel will kill the separator vortex and give you poor results .. The military version on armoured vehicles of the 1960's that cleaned the outside pensioned air & pressurised the inside of vehicle to 1 " of water on th gauge were good, as there was a pre cyclone twig & big debris removal set of baffles for clean outs , Depending on how good or bad it is I may have to incorporate a simple set of baffles to drop off the bigger bits of waste into a cleanable sump box.

For the suction pipe from equipments I've purchase 4 strap on bosses for 110 grey soil pipe 3 mtrs of pipe four boss reducers down from 50 mm to 1& 1/4 in as they might be needed to hold the suction levels on the suction pipes on the two small band saws and one on the linisher/sander. The pipe taking the cleaned air to the vacuum source will hopefully be 50mm Each end of th 110 mm pipe will have a simple solvent welded on removable end cap device so that I can do a simple cap removal and clean put of any clogging up .

Got a shock at the price of the plastic bits £89.19 plus 17.83 VAT hopefully I'll have enough 110 mm tube left to make three more cyclone hose chests . The tube was cheap at £13.94 plus vat , those strap on collars were £ 5.94 each .
I decided against making the air chest out of wood as they would be hard to clear if blocked , need a lot of sealing as well as making it really smooth on the internals .

I gave it a lot of consideration.
The 20 or so inch length of soil pipe is just for making an air chest to take four 2" pipes , three in, from equipment and one out to the cyclone extractor >
I have the choice of four different vacuum machines , so it will be suck it & see on the day ..
Flexible black PVC pipe work will be 2" smooth internal bore ribbed on the outside & the cyclone extraction pipe will be 50 mm smooth internal , ribbed on the outside .

Thanks for that ,we already have two " Record " dust extractors similar to that one they are not the most effective of things, as there is always a 2 mtr dust halo on the floor after a few minutes of use despite me removing , washing , drying and fitting the bags correctly. We are looking to have a greater filtration ability for one of our members has had cancer in his throat & now has to use a button in his wind pipe to make a rasping voice noise . Several others are ex miners who worked underground so we are taking a lot of care not to cause injury to their lungs or to any other member for that matter of fact.

Thanks Turbo , in your earlier post you mentioned sucking plastic tubs almost flat , sounds a lot like your vacuum was far too powerful for the intake pipes to keep up with hence the massive depression in the tub .

Early on in my posts I proposed putting an adjustable spring loaded suction release flap valve in the lid . The military cyclones had one and so does most of Dysons & other vacuum machines .
Think I'll play with that idea . right from the start . Think I've still got vacuum release valve on some scrap Dyson bits .

You could always use one of them to provide the suction & use a cyclone to separate out the dust before it reaches the record extractor.

Problem is the two machines are 50 mtrs apart in different buildings , due to one being in a very noisy area ( planer thicknesser & a big bench saw But I have a few thought for using the dual cyclone I've ordered on a single light industrial wet & dry machine ,.

You'll buy one of those chip extractors second hand for less than £100 in GB.

But over here used ones fetch nearly the price of a new one!
