Plastering dilemma.

We had the plasterer down the hallway a couple of months ago and now I've come to fit the skirting board I've spotted this.


The corner runs out a mile and it's really noticeable next to the wood flooring joints.
He must have knocked the bead and not noticed
We'll get him back in a few months time to do the next room so he can sort it out then but is there anything I can do for now?

Not really I would just temporally fix the skirting if it bothers you to wait. Its miles out im suprised he didnt notice

Its only a short section, I wouldnt worry about it. Very few houses are square.

Fix it temporarily and see how you feel after a while. You might find it doesn't bother you and you can live with it. It wouldn't bother me in an old house but if it's a new build where everything else is perfect it might.

Without the floor down it probably wasn't that noticeable plus it's exaggerated by the long length of skirting.

Build quality seems to have gone out the window in the 60s and 70s I've found...I once hung a radiator and it looked visibly out of level...on checking it was perfect!

I’d be tempted to make a timber wedge to pack out the skirting. Maybe split the difference. Wouldn’t notice unless you looked for it.

The long piece of skirting grossly exaggerates the problem.

Over the length of the actual piece to be fitted, how much it is in actual millimetres?

As above, recess the skirting into the wall (or thin the wood down) at the fat end and pack it out at the thin end, so the midpoint is correct. Once it is caulked, you won't notice anything.

A poor fit on the external mitre will draw your eye more than non-parallelity with the flooring edge.

Id fix the skirting parallel to the floor, or there abouts, and fill the top of the skirting.

Sure, you would be able to see that the top of the skirting was slightly "triangular" but it's not as if anyone else would ever notice.

...and, in a couple of months, you probably won't care either.


It's not necessarily the plasterers "fault". Wall probably wasnt flawless, board went up on the wonk, skim may have been uneven thickness. A load of knock on errors that noone spotted, (including you) until you put an oversized length of skirting along some grained flooring.

If the chap rebeads it and reskims, you'll loose around the door frame.

He can feather it in there, but then you're just shifting the non-parallel issue to somewhere else.

Sure it's not right, but where do you go from here?

As I say, Id make it up by filling down the back of the skirting.

I've been squaring up an old timber building, I had the same and packed a wall out way too much, ended up stripping back and redoing

Check how it looks with the correct size piece

Looking at it again it must have been like that before as if he didnt knock the bead thats way to much for plaster to make up , typically 5mm would be max and then not ideal . Should have been bonding first to bring it closer

You can split the error 3 ways so it almost disappears (shave the high end, pack out the low end, the remaining problem will be 1/3 of what it is now).
Fill the gap with caulk and the "tilt" will be a lot less noticeable. Things like that annoy me once I know about them but that;s just me...

I feel your pain. I paid good money to have a new timber roof (exposed beams) fitted in a period cottage last year. The main beams are cock-eyed and I'm trying to work out how to fix it without taking the whole roof off and doing it properly. Standards of workmanship these days is shocking

Simples. Rip up the flooring and lay it down so it matches the wonky wall, no one will every notice it then

My OCD won't let it lay I'm afraid, if anything it looks worse with the correct length of skirting board, I just put the long bit on for the photos as it wasnt that visible.
The floor was laid before the plastering so he should have squared it up, even doing it by eye would have been better!

I'm with others who say it is such a short piece, ignore it but that can be hard, like a crooked picture.

As has been suggested you could pack, square it up and gap fill from the top, when painted white, will be barely noticeable and stop looking.

The wall can be squared up, seems like a lot of effort for a small issue.

The builder who put my timber roof on cockeyed made a couple of similar suggestions (he could remove the straight wood above the wonky big beams and refit them so the whole roof was - consistently - wonky, or had I thought about selling the house if the new roof he had fitted bothered me so much?) Refitting the wonky beams he had put in so they were not wonky would be too much work for him

I'm living elsewhere until I can make the roof "not cockeyed". Maybe I have OCD or maybe I just refuse to live in a fully renovated cottage done to such a poor standard. Jokes about "just live with it" are not helpful !
Work on my roof is scheduled to start in March, I'm avoiding the place til then as it gives me a headache.

Fit it and forget it, or get a couple of corners and board the end again and skim it.

Or just fit it and watch the tv

Sympathies to OP, all I can say is you are not alone.

I totally understand the sentiment. I have, however, learned to live with quirky, nowadays. As annoying as it may be at the time, consider it uniqueness, character, or suchlike.

Reason I don't overly obsess nowadays? I've observed people who demand perfection, see how they live their lives, observed their attitudes, etc., & I decided I'd much rather stick to quirkiness than ever try to live with their kind of facade on their life, or their attitude.

If the quality of work is good other than the alignment issue, just class that as a feature/quirk.
