Plastering costs

Friend just paid £800 for a 12x12 living room, including ceiling. That was materials, vat and labour, in South Manchester. The £100 quotes seem ridiculously cheap for a quality job in a room with loads of corner bits to do.

I saw someone complaining on a forum once that the plasterer wasn't discounting them for the doorways...

Lol. We have occasionally done a bit of our own plastering, just patching bits in the ceiling or wall where it had cracked and blown. Patching a hole is a totally different ball game to doing curves on bay windows, corners, round doors etc. £100 to do a bathroom, with half a dozen different walls, seems crazy cheap.

We've had a roof repair recently. Cost a fortune because we ended up using a big national company. Had tried using guys from Trustatrader but they either didn't phone back or made arrangements to come round and didn't turn up. Then when you rang them they rearranged .... and then didn't turn up again.

The quote can be as cheap as you like but if they won't turn up it's meaningless.

Bonding not only supports mold growth, it actually encourages it big time!

I know someone who went bust over using it in damp conditions on a big contract.

Doesn't look too bad...main problem I see is he seems to have somehow plastered his shirt into the wall...I'd check if he wants it back .

The problem with plastering is everyone thinks it's so easy...when in fact if you do it yourself...it's so easy! Granted I got a lesson from my mate who is a plasterer....but rocket science it is not!

It really isn't that difficult...there is 1 key bit of info that makes it doable....on my mates recommendation I bought a marshalltown pre worn trowel.

Forget trying to plaster with the wickes bargain bin £5 jobbie....the pre worn is ground the same as a worn in plasterers trowel and that's what makes even an idiot like me able to do a half descent job.

Plasterers don't like catching their nice old trowel on a drywall screw head that's for sure!

One of those where it's not difficult to do it but it is difficult to do it well.

Those guys also plastered the washing machine in.

As in it could no longer be pulled out without removing some of the plaster.

I'm certainly glad it wasn't my kitchen or my job. I'd have been going mental.

Ive had some of my customers moaning that they need to work 2 weeks to pay me for a job that's taken us 1 day...I just tell them to re-train as a roofer and in 45 years come back and let me know how your feeling

(not that you are next door - one of my neighbours already has my work on their walls, and working for the other wouldn't be sensible)

Does it need plastering, looks like a lot will be tiled anyway, spend the £400 on extra tiles?

It needs to be levelled up and the tiles will come short of the areas that need plastering so probably a 2 inch gap at the sides of the shower area and the same at the top of the tiles, only tiling the lower half and the shower area.

After some messaging today I have someone coming over tuesday to have a look, he's also a builder so will have a chat about him rebuilding our garage which is on the plans for next year and I'll start another thread about that.
If the price is £400 then I'll pay that as initially I was quoted £5k for redoing the ensuite with me fitting the toilet and sink and supplying tiles, so far I'm in at less than £2k for shower screen, tray, shower, tiles, toilet, sink, taps, plasterboard,lights, fan and a load of fittings.

about £2oo- day for a decent plasterer northeast . i mainly do my own to a good standard. depends on if i feel like doing it or how busy at work i am. i can get someone good for a ton a day cash so it realy is not worth my while sometimes

Small hallway with 5 doors, so all fiddly stuff lots of rough as hell old plaster to cover/make good was 300 quid incl all materials, nice job as well will certainly use again, he reckons work is drying up as people are starting to watch the pennies.

the only thing i havent ever done in a house is put any wallpaper on . its never appealed to me
