Plasma torch type ??

I have a plasma cutter but its the touch torch type, I am after one which ignites away from metal, what is the technical term for this when I am looking to buy one. TIA

That would use a pilot arc.

The ones that you push down are the Tramifet type. A similar one uses the pressure to move the electrode to start.

If you want to change to a pilot arc type, you will need to add a pilot arc circuit.

I was looking at changing mine as I could not find tips and electrodes at a reasonable price. I did find a good source.

Bought an R-Tech hf40 very nice inded and got a great deal from Dylan, well worth asking for a deal if you paypal as gift so no fees, very nice cut and pilot start a must for rusty old bodywork

Just looking for some feedback on your plasma as I'm thinking of buying an R-tech. Is it man enough for some prolonged cutting of, say 5mm steel plate. i've got quite a lot to do for an upcoming job.

The latest small plasma cutters us the air pressure in the torch to move the electrode away from the tip to strike the pilot arc when the trigger is pressed.

I think the manufactures have done this to reduce EM interference from the HF start for better conformity to EMC rules and it also saves them the price of the HF Start unit. The Air Liquide Group (SAF, Oerlokon and Cemont) and Cebora use this method.

But I think this would be difficult to adapt to your machine due to the sequence control system required.

So far excellent, needs a 32a supply which I didnt realise but luckily got one. Should be fime on 5mm as it will do up to 12mm
