plasma cutter advice please

Hi all
Been looking into getting one of these for a while now, but put off by the price, just seen one for sale, new with 1 years warranty at a price I can go to.
Its a Giant Cut 40, never heard of them, think it originates from china but is being sold by a Co in lancashire, anyone know if they are any good. Most of the work I need it to do will be cutting profiles in 3mm plate, with odd bits of 6mm and a very occasional 12mm.
Basically it seems too cheap, its hf non contact start, at under £250 think its any good??

How good it is depends on how much support you get from the co in Lancashire. If it needs to be serviced; will they service it locally, offer free replacement under warranty or charge ship back to china.

The Giant welders have been reported here to have little or no support; usually sold by box movers (some with 7-day guarantee; after that deal with China.)

Never used one but have heard lots of bad press about Giant kit, think I've also read that the company in Blackburn has some kind of 7 day disclaimar in their adds ( assuming it's the same company)

Is this an Ebay item? if so post a link and we can have a look.

One of the members on here recomended a Rehmann unit and I have taken the plunge, only had it a few days but happy so far.

By the way a 12mm cut will not be pretty!

Sorry haven't been on the computer today till now, you are right about the company being in blackburn, lancs. And yes it is on ebay, hopefully this is the link to it.

I think from what I suspected from the price and what you have said about the make and the seller I will steer clear of this one.

Plasma Cutting on the Cheap!

I am only new to this forum, but have recently bought a new Cebora Prof37 Plasma Cutter.

Having looked on eBay at the many and varied machines for sale, I decided I would go to my local engineers suppy. They offered me the same price for the same machine available on eBay. But I get all the back-up of a local dealer. Not only that, you will need spare nozels, electrodes and other vulnerable torch part's. I would also advize that you get some spacers that slip over the nozel and give you a fixed distance from the workpiece to your nozel. Free hand cutting is not easy and can be very expensive! In case you were not aware, you will need a good air supply. I use an ABAC B3914 150Ltr Compressor. It just about keeps up with the cutter.

And another thing. The firm in Blackburn Lancashire, operate from part of an old mill. Nothing wrong in that, they are importer's of Chinease made equipment and therefore probably cannot offer any back-up as they are unlikely to stock spares. Neither do they have a workshop as they are only importer's. So the moral of the story is, "you pay your money and you take your choice".

Hi new to forum .I have a giant cut40 and it worked really well for 3 months then became harder to strike arc i think the ht circuit is u/s ,going to try and get support will let you know(and yes this came from blackburn)

It is EU law they have to give and honour a 2 year warranty. And technical they are open to claims upto 6 years, after the date of purchase. Sale of goods Act 1979

I'm thinking there's an opportunity for a service techie here, lots of Chinese-made kit breaking down... it can't all be terminal and it's not as though welders and plasmas are complicated things.

Really? Certainly does to me when buying something. Far better to be able to pick up the phone should there be a problem, & speak to somebody that actually has some knowledge of what they are selling & can dispatch any required parts from stock - get you up & running again quickly. "Send it back & we'll have a look at it" is alright if you are prepared to wait... if indeed they offer that at all! (irrespective of consumer rights, which is full of grey areas anyway if you read in detail).

me brother bought a reasonably cheap plasma of the internet along with a few of the other lads in a club . his went wrong he rang the supplier up and was sent a replacement machine within 4 days and hasnt had any bother since . well pleased . we hear all the horor stories but never the good ones

They keep messing me around saying things like a container is due in on thusday(four weeks in a row) part will cost around £30 then finally he says he has one and wants £75. Dont know if its a comunication thing but im not impressed
