One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that, if you make an Aframe it has to be approved just like new trailers have to be now in order to be legal

That makes no sense; you'd just put the transfer box in neutral? You wouldn't want to tow it with spectacles or a dolly unless the trailing prop shaft was removed as the centre diff would get lunched.

Having used one in the past for my offroader and doing lots of research, its not simple.
Basically you will be towing a trailer with the wrong lighting and incorrect brake efficiency.
We could spen hours in discussion but as already mentioned I am not convinced even VOSA / police know the inns and outs.

When I towed my race car I had an a frame attached to the car with some big rose joints on the front tie bars.
It was a propper auto braking frame that attached to the brake pedal via a Bowden cable.
I understood that if towing a car on an a frame and it had brakes the brakes had to be operational.

This is exactly the instructions that came with my A frame conversion for the motorhome. There is even a distance in the regs that an A frame coupled vehicle is required to be able to reverse safely which is a bit iffy when you are relying on castor angle! Towing a Citigo with my Peugeot M/home is a pure dream, just need to get out there again. The only people to get away with dodgy trailers are the farmers.I can write a lot about this but people would still disagree so here it is from horses mouth.

Having borrowed an A-frame a few times to recover non-driving cars, can you borrow or hire one? (less hassle than storing your own). Personally I'd not want to be near a home made one in case of any accidents (my view - other folk will have other views).
Why not keep looking to buy an used one, a mate has a folding ex-Rac one that will fit in the boot of your car it's so compact, plenty of choice as lots of folk are clearing garages now they have spare time, I see a few under £150 on Eb@y https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_...090&LH_TitleDesc=0&_osacat=131090&_odkw=frame

the biggest issus with a frames are they wont go on most cars made in the last 15 years. undertray has to come off to get at the wishbones it often holds loads of plastic trim like arch liners off the wheels. then there is the frount bumper they have got lower it will probally hit the bumper.
also you cant reverse with them well you can go back dead straight but enything else and itll make a mss of wishbones

I used to use an A frame to tow my drift car to events, I had a separate trailer lighting board on the back to make it look legal.
At the time my reseach led me to believe that because it wasn't braked and over 750kg, it couldn't count as a legal trailer, and instead, recovery towing speeds applied - I think it was something like 40mph on an A road? I can't remember.
Anyways, I used it loads up and down motorways etc, knowing full well I could either be done under towing regs, or done for speeding. Or both, lol.
As already mentioned on here, it's such a grey area that you might be lucky for life, and never get pulled... or you might get a particularly nasty vosa stop and have the book thrown at you... you never know.
One thing with my setup - being unbraked and no nose-weight, it had a tendency to push the car into corners... you really had to drive and brake gently, and if you didn't, you'd risk coming unstuck... straight lines it was as stable as anything, in fact more stable than a proper trailer. But hit the brakes on a roundabout and the tow car's back end would be pushed wide, happened a couple of times when I wasn't paying attention....
Bear in mind my drift car was a 200sx with a welded diff, and my tow car was a VW bora... yes, I know, lol
there's a reason why the recovery speed limits are lower. I really wouldn't recommend it for anything other than pure recovery, legalities aside.
