Hello !
I had discovered this great website thanks to a link on the Renault 4 site, and planned to subscribe the forum but finally never really got to time to do this.
Finally, I use the occasion of having a little bit of spare time before taking my A Level to ask you all my questions.
Please apologize my forgetting to introduce myself : in a few words, my name is Gabriel, just 19, living in Somme ( equivalent of your shires ), and planning to follow english studies next year at University.
Well now, welding :
I have been very interested in old cars since I'm a kid, my she-cousin used to have a pinky Beetle 1302, and my Grandfather was mainly a big fan of these cars.
Unfortunately, he sold his latest one in 1984 ( I wasn't born yet ), and inherited a 78' Renault 12 TS Automatic from a Belgian uncle, who was living in Antwerpen. The car has been his until his death, in October 2005, although he stopped driving in 2002. I had planned in 2003 to remove some body parts, such as the front fenders, to get an idea of the body condition, as a little bit of rust was appearing here and there and my Grandmother was thinking about asking a bodyman to cope with rust and respraying it, so that we could keep the car in the family, for me or my mother, driving it on Sundays.
Unfortunately, this idea of removing was not the best I got : indeed, I discovered a fully rusted body ( although the car has only 61,000 kms ), a condition possibly explainable by the fact the car stayed from 78 to 84 in Antwerpen in a garage, but not so far from the beach ( the salt... ).
Noticing this, I decided to stop all removings, and there car has been staying in the garage from 2003, and I start it each week.
As I should work this summer, I would like to use a bit of the money I will get to start the body restoration. The main places to restore are the floors and sills, as well as the rear fenders.
I am currently looking at the prices and characteritics of different MIG welders, and I'm wondering which one could fit : I have been told that welding a 0.9mm metal would require a welder able to weld from 30amp, so as not to pierce the metal.
I have also been told that the flux core could avoid me to use gaz, for a very same result.
Do you have any idea about the welder I would need ? ( cost, amps, flux core or gaz, etc. ).
I do not want to spend too much in buying a welder, because I will also need then a air compressor to spray some finish before considering to paint the welded areas.
I will let you see once I understand how does it work to post photos on this forum the main parts in need of welding ( I took digital photos a few months ago ), so that you could have an idea of the amount of work ( of course, much more than the value of the car itself, but the car's value to me is much more important than money ).
Cheers,
Gabriel.
