Had a go at a 2 inch socket weld it went alright its in fixed position wish I had me bench did it off the floor

That would fail on prep, get it as clean as you can

Cant use grinders where I live at certain times the old boy complained where I live it was more just to use the rods as I've never used them before

Next time the time rolls around that you can use a grinder, get a load of plates ground up then, otherwise it's a bit of a pointless exercise, the rods will behave differently on dirty steel anyways . What rods are they

Fair enough I've got some test prices I've got to prep but when I'm at dads scrap yard ill prep some up I did not like the supercito 7018 rods they don't run very nice but it was just a quick go as I was bord and all my gear was in the boot of me car wife was asleep so I welded for a bit

Even tho out of a fresh vac Pac would it of made much difference wacking them in the oven for a bit

Wouldn't trust a plumber to do anything over 3/4 bsp for the simple reason if welds need to be bombed (x rayed) it speaks for it's self . Solder is bonding you cannot compare the two skills a plumber is a pipe welder with his (brains?) kicked out

Can't whak watching a pipe welder perform and asking questions at the same that's how I learned , don't be embarrassed by asking the same questions all the time it just means you need it to sink in .

A decent bloke will point you in the right direction at every stage of the job as if you were his son don't let him think he's talking to himself and show interest by having short breaks and doing a bit, that way you'll have something to show him

30 this year mate currently training in structural steel work but I miss being on the tools even as a mate I've got stilsons blowlamps spanners to do the job just not enough exp and no xp in welding pipe as a job

Well boys here is some photos of stuff I used to do before I moved in to the structure steel business. I was a commercial plumbers mate then moved on to a pipefitters mate then lost the contract self employed and I did not fancy Scotland.

What size is that in the rigid mate? Looks like 2"?

Them machines are a lot smaller than twenty years ago!
