Pipe Radiator ????

I am thinking of making a a couple pipe radiators for our greenhouse.

I was thinking 4 horizontal lengths of 1,1/2 inch airline steel tubing or scaffold tubes say 20 foot long welded into 2, 50mm box uprights with and inlet and outlet at the bottom at either end and a bleed outlet at the top.



Do you think it would work ????

yep a lot of old greenhouse heaters were made of steel 3 inch pipe low down round the greenhouse and fed off a boiler

Thanks bright spark thats what i was hopeing to hear. lol. sometime I get an idea and it all seems daft till I post about it on here.

Now I got that question answered I thought I would share my little project with you all, as it could be beneficial for me (stepping into the unknown) and others if they want to give it a try, that’s if it all works lol.

I have an old Worcester 20/25 oil fired heating boiler guts



Ive had it sat in a shed for a few years, I figured making another drip feed oil burner to see if I could make a heating system for the greenhouse. With all the matériels scavenged from around the yard I am making the burner same as the one I have been using for a number of years now, as it burns really clean with no smoke and puts out some great heat.



Burner is almost done (ie tack welded together) I have cut a new hole in the bottom of the fire chamber and I am almost at a point of testing the burner fixed to the bottom of the firebox. I still need to make up a stand when I have sourced some more metal, I am thinking box or angle iron. Here’s a few pics to show where I am with it.



Once I know it will draw through ok I figure piping the water into a cylinder , I have been looking at different systems ie vented or unvented not sure yet, then drawing the water round the pipe radiator. I will obviously need some sort of circulating pump and some sort of safety valve to keep the pressure from blowing myself up. If it works its my intention to fix the oil boiler in a steel type shed so it stands alone outside any buildings. I will post more as and when and probably ask a few more question from the more experienced plumber out there. All the guidence is gratefully appreciated

Some folks get quite creative, have though about a rocket stove, looks a nice simple design. When the shepherds hut gets finished the family want a hot tub (not father he said he is not sitting in a field having a bath lol) I think a rocket stove would be a good way to heat it.

The pipes in a commercial greenhouse run down the bay have a u bend on and come back, they don’t have any uprights just the pipes

I dont remember my fathers been water in the 5" cast pipes but i do remeber the cast iron pipes that was used from the wood stove brick built

from what i can remember they run the exhaust through them

i wouldnt advise running it with water as you will see from that video it needs to be pumped and have a good enough header tank and you also have to be very aware of how much oil is needed to heat that water

if you get it wrong you will get what happens in that video an out of control heater system that blows jet steam out of it

Cheers I will only burn paper to see if it will draw through otherwise itl be like heating an engine with no water lol

I notice that in the video that s an vented tank I think you dont need all that hieght on an unvented tank, but dont quote me lol

I am only going to be using 1.1/2 diameter pipe that’s why I thought 4 would give a better heat out, its going to be trial and error I think

You will need to have it open vented with an F&E tank and a pump. I can dig out the heat output from 11/2" steel tube its not massive. Just done a big greenhouse with 3" pipe to get a decent output but maybe the length of pipe you have will help. You want it open vented as it may well boil - either a galvy tank or a boil proof one.

you will get about 150 watts per metre out of 11/2" pipe (very) roughly
