“…like a spiral staircase forever rising higher…”

If the 36 degree angles are measured in plan view, this sounds like a staircase built within a 10-sided tower.

Calculating the mitre angle for a 10-sided tower is straightforward if each section of rail has the same slope. What I have not understood is why the second section in this case is at a steeper slope than the first. Can you explain why the slope changes, ieezitin, or have I misunderstood the whole concept?

This is a set of stairs that is leading to a swimming pool and pool house, the steps are flagstone and are of different elevations. As you can see in the picture the unevenness.

The black railing shown is just a rendition of what’s needed it was cut and pasted on the picky.

Now I see what you mean.

If there are just two straight pieces of railing needed, then I would put up the three posts and use a tape measure to find the distance between the start point and the end point. Knowing the lengths of all three sides of the triangle, you can then use the cosine rule to find the angle where the two pieces of rail join, and cut your pipe at half this angle.
