Pipe Clamp

Anybody Know where I could get a pipe clamp of some description, that would open out to 100mm Diameter and it would be able to clamp around the pipe, not just at two points like standard clamps, I could make one up, but the project I am working on has been dragging on, time is not on my side at the moment.

Drill/Mill a 100mm hole in a lump of metal and then cut it in half. Two halves of a clamp

I want it for clamping expansion exhaust sections, while I tack them up.

it's for this, I have 90mm diameter sections reducing in size, I get a bit of an headache trying to hold them steady, I don't know what everyone else use

I see, not what i was thinking.

Fidly at the best of times. Just use my fingers normally. Helps if one of the bits is fixed to something.

How about using needle nose vise grips, putting sections together from one end...?
Not enough room really.


Bit of flat, rolled round say 150diam, but only 2/3rds of a circle or just under. Threaded holes at each end and one between, 3 bolts to clamp it up, might need pads on them... Perhaps holes in the flat to allow tacking up?

Another thought, get a set of them cheap mole grip type welding clamps, and butcher one of them to make something up?

Takes too long to clamp something like that.
Put the first piece on the bench and put a heavy bit of steel or similar inside it then hold the other piece up against it. Few tacks then weld it up.
You need to weight the first piece or you'll end up chasing it all over the bench with the second piece.

ive been doing stuff like that recently i just use a bit of 2" masking tape and then tack on the oposite side to the tape.the only problem is if it gets to warm it melts the glue.

That is the problem I have, conical/cone shapes are murder to try and keep dead still, I am finding it difficult enough doing good decant welds' that i am happy with on this thin gauge, without like you said about chasing the work around the bench, I have been looking in to buying some clamps until I seen the prices for these things, So I think I am going to have to do what Hitch said and make some up.

How about welding a few bits of rod (something like 6/8mm) to the table to form a cage round the bottom piece?

I can see what your getting at Archie, that would work perfectly for doing the sections one at a time, but the biggest problems I have is when I assemble the cones/sections and weld them together tacking them all up and they move before you get a good tack on them.

How about a nice big magnet (old speaker) on the bench?

You could stick a lump of steel inside the stainless cone to clamp it and you should be able to get it in just about any position you like.

On small things like that magnets will pull the arc about. Personally i use bits of tape to hold things in place for the initial tacks. To stop small, light stuff from moving just weight it with a small length of 3mm strip/angle or you could knock yourself up something like this.
