Pillar drills.

Morning guys.
Just a question regarding radial pillar drills.
I see a lot of posts on other forums regarding using a pillar drill as a mill...well kind of. I no pillar drills are designed to drill and not mill because of sideways preasure resulting in naffed bearings ECT.. but what about radial drills that the head can tilt 45 degree L and R ...radial drills are still classed as pillar drills . Just curious.

The radial drill is still putting the pressure through the bearing in the same way as a "normal" pillar drill,there won't be any side loading of the bearings.

The entire head, quill, spindle and drill bit are tilted so the force you apply to the handle is still parallel to the taper as in a regular drill.

Ok...understand..i was just curious to the difference...have been looking at different pillar drills with the head tilt ..

I't not so much the bearings but the taper holding the chuck on can't stand the side pressure and pops out.

Not much use to you unless you come across one cheap or free like mine, but I have an old Atlas drill that's designed to do light milling, there is a threaded collar to hold a cutter holding adapter in the taper instead of the chuck, never used it but these were made from early 1930s to late 50s so must be OK.

I don't think there's really a need to tilt the head, how often to you need a wonky hole in something too big to just angle the table or put it on blocks? You can't just plunge straight into a lump of steel at an angle anyway, it'll snap the drill.

Yes. This is why I kind of got curious. I like to find out about these things... can't really see the need for a tilt head..
