1HP would be silly, and also quite large for a single phase motor. You're creating problems which don't exist. Address the power issue if and when it ever arises, which it likely won't. As for which, the Record or Draper, quality speaks for itself. One is, one isn't. Most modern, domestically biased drill presses are fine for whacking holes in material. If you want precision and reliability, however, generally you can forget it.

Wise words. If you need more power buy a bigger drill and sell the one you've got to help pay for it. If you buy a used one it won't lose much in value, and you may even make a profit!

Aye, that's another beauty of the older, quality stuff. If it can be had at a decent price, one's pretty much guaranteed to break even at worst on resale, unless one's really unlucky.

Sorry my friend not intending to . Just seems to me wired why a brand like Draper has a 500 and 1000 Watt bench Drills or even the Lidl bench Drill is a 500Watt .All this Single Phase !If I see it right and please correct me on that,the Watt is not so important rather the actual quality of the machine and the rest of their components ?

I updated my earlier post to make mention of the whole rating thing these days. The Wattage is important, but only to a degree. Much more important is the quality of *all* of the components, including the motor itself. However, you could have the best motor in the world, but you get stuck with a shonky drill which has a bit of play in the spindle, and it truly will drive you to distraction. Aim for quality overall, and address any issues if/when they arise.

Much more important than the wattage, generally, are the quality of your bits, the sharpness of those bits and also your drilling technique. For example, I still tend to use hand drills, (hand powered, not hand held), most of the time, and I can merrily chain drill a 5" diameter round hole in a gas canister, (they're around 2mm to 3mm wall thickness?), with little physical effort. Technique and tools are your biggest stumbling blocks, not power.

Look at it this way Bill, the capacity of the drilling capacity of the Record is 1/2" so the motor will be fully able to handle that capacity or Record would have used a larger one. And, although it is a high quality drill it is intended for hobby use not continuous industrial work. It will be fine.
Picked mine up on Tuesday and I'm delighted with it ! I had seen them before and used one that friend had but as they were £300 when new I could never afford it ! Until now with the help of ebay and someone who didn't quite know what they had !

Bill, read this... http://www.diyfaq.org.uk/powertools/cordless.htm yeah, i know it's about cordless drills but read it as it's still relevant. Then consider that while a 230V 600W variable speed hand drill is 'more powerful' it doesn't have gear ratios (belts/gearbox) like drill presses/cordless drills. Gears 'multiply' torque. Variable speed (the way it's done on 'powerful' cheap stuff) gives the opposite of what's needed... when you slow the rpm you lose torque and motor cooling i.e. that larger diameter drill that needs slower rpm and more pressure applying is at odds with what's available

The cheapest of cheapnese drill presses will be fine with regards to power even if they're lying about it having only 250W. Where they fall down is everywhere else... impossible to drill accurate holes because the table flexes when you lean on it and there's so much slop in the spindle. A badly finished mickey mouse taper is often par for the course too... you've fixed the chocolate table with a car jack so you can now lean on a large drill at low rpm without the table flexing. Instead of the motor stalling the chuck starts slipping in the spindle (and then falls out when you stop to investigate). Fix that and belt slip will probably be next as gearing makes it far harder to stall the (optimistically rated) 250W motor

I do know what you mean hotrod. This is what me with the new stuff .Sometimes they adv. stuff like high Watts etc as hook and they have forgot everything else! It is this marketing that has destroy the reputation of many brands with cheap stuff this day.So then old good stuff my friends .

Yes, thats it !! Had a play with it yesterday and it's very nice to use, feels like a quality tool. The motor is Brook-Crompton so much more convincing than a Bejing special !
