Pillar drill on ebay

Collected the drill today, the pictures on Fleabay don't do it justice, it appears the drill was owed by an engineering firm that went bust (Lot No: ticket on table) but it was never collected and got left on site.

The new occupant of the unit just put it on the bay to get rid of it.

The drill needs a good clean and will look 100% better, I will probably take the gearbox side plate of at the weekend and inspect the dog clutch, plus it has the standard arc of drill holes in the table.

Now I have to find a 1 phase 3/4 hp or 1 hp motor 1400 rpm, does anyone in Essex/Kent have one in the workshop corner doing nothing???

Maybe a drill vice as well???

People have done me favours on here mate, I just try to keep the ball rolling. :-) I got a bargain on a load of metalcraft kit that premiershipman pointed us at and thought I'd do the same....so really, you owe HIM. A beer! :-) Glad its looking good though, even with the obligatory line of drill holes :-)

Working on that principle Shox Dr is in the chair for the beers then being as he a nice surface table due to me spotting on Fleabay.

Blimey, not quite like that one...although I suppose I could use it as a dining table, but what a bargain!
I just need a plate to put fine sand paper on for lapping things in....like the one that someone's just posted but not in Essex!

Today I measured the mounting/shaft and bought a replacement single phase motor for the drill.

On returning home I started removing the pulley, only to find that someone had in the past replaced the motor drive pulley with a 4 groove pulley instead of the standard 5 groove item, also in the process of removing it the smallest pulley grabbed on the key way and broke....

So now I'm trying to find a 5 step 2" 3" 4" 5" 6" diameter pulley with a 3/4" bore, the hunt is now on.

Apart from my local bearing factors, does anyone have any links or web site suggestions?

I used to regularly visit my local scrapyard (morley waste traders, albert road, Leeds).
They had a skip full of scrapped motors.
I'd go down on a saturday morning first thing with a pulley puller, and take off about 20 or 30 pulleys by dinnertime.
usually got at least three or four 5-step pulleys in the bag.

might be worth a try if you have any local scrappies?

Unfortunately its mostly recycling centres down here, very few old style scrap yards around here now.

I can think of one yard where I'd be allowed to hang around just in case and I'II bet they only get a couple of motors in a week.

That would be a possible solution, if I'm on the lathe I might as well make a complete new pulley. but finding a 6 inch diameter alloy blank would probably cost more than a unfinished pre-made pulley.

If you have a lathe, how could you not?
spin up a rough oversized pulley blank in expanded polystyrene, empty baked bean tin (probably need a potato tin, tbh) as a *ONE TIME* crucible.
hole in ground. charcoal. vac on blow down a piece of 50mm shs.
any scrap aluminium. - I recommend avoiding pop cans, tho.
skim the dross off with a slotted spoon (when swmbo isn't looking )
*dry* sand in a *metal* bucket, around the eps blank (with small part of it exposed).
pour molten aluminium onto blank.

SMOKE AND FLAMES

one blank, ready to machine to size.
If it doesn't work, remelt the blank -
cost is about 2 or 3 quid in charcoal.
if you have a source of HARDWOOD (I use hawthorn hedges) scraps, cost=nearly zero.

Update found a local pulley manufacturer/stockist, phoned them, stock on the shelf and collected it on the way home from work, sorted mostly.

Just have to bore and keyway it, now....
