I can see a battery powered version being a pain if you forget to turn it off.
Maybe add a small transformer viia/next to the drill plug.
I cab see a use for them, would be able to line up a pencil mark on wood or plastics, stuff that's not so easy to center punch.
For a lot of the metal work I do I print templates into adhesive paper and stick it on the metal so it would work nicely for that as well.
Also be handy if you wanted a few holes in a tube as you could line up a previously drilled hole with a wrapped paper template of you needed one offset from the other.
Having said that, most of the stuff I do woth templates is too big to fit in my pillar drill.
The smaller stuff tends to require more accuracy so it might not be much good for that either.
