pillar drill chuck falling out

Hi,

I've a clarke metalworker pillar drill. It's quite large and heavy but not very robust. The chuck keeps falling out of it, There is a grove on the tapered shaft....I've tried pressing it on with no joy.

Is there an o ring or something missing, to lock it in??

Any help, greatly appreciated.

loctite and and tap it on .leave it for 24 hours its . not a no 2 or 3 morse taper is it ??if it is dont loctite it on clean it up with a taper reamer and refit

They should stay in place if the male & female tapers are clean and grease-free. They also have to be machined accurately which is where the Clarke falls down.

I had the same problem on a Clarke drill, fixed it by throwing the drill away and getting a decent old British one.

and theres the answer throw it away u can loosen loctite with heat. the only time the chuck would need removing is if it was knacked

Hi guys, thanks for the replies.

I got it the drill given, it was free. I was just planning on getting it working again. I'll try clean all the surfaces as best i can, and Ill try to tap it on.
I don't mind if it was loctite on. As I don't plan on removing it again.

The taper in that picture is the male taper on the adaptor, you can glue that in without any problems.

I assumed you were talking about the Morse taper on the adaptor that goes into the quill, which is what gave problems on my drill.

The chuck has a hole all the way through, Soz. I'm not sure of the names of the parts. I'll do a google search.

Thats a external jacobs taper, probably jt1 from eyeballing the stuff round it. They were used as a "standard" on smaller stuff and hand drills that didn't come with a morse taper quill and made popular by jacobs etc. If you cant extend the drill and see a slot in the side above this, its probably not a morse taper quill. If it does have the slot, the but with that taper on it will be an adapter shank, with morse 1/2/3 etc on one side, and jt external on the other.

Sometimes there is a small keeper screw at the bottom of the chuck and a thread into the end of the taper to keep the chuck pressed in position, though a taper fit shouldnt need it, sometimes theyre so badly made they do ...
I'd look for if the end of the jt taper is threaded for such a screw, and if not I'd loctited it on. I doubt its going to be a powerhouse of a pillar drill you will want to keep round forever if its not even big enough to have morse quill so I wouldnt spend ages getting the fit right, and as brightspark says, if you take the quill out and heat it with a blowlamp, you can break the adhesive afterwards.

My Clarke had a Morse MT2 taper in the quill.

One of the parts that let my Clarke pillar drill down was the chuck quality, I have since swapped it for a keyless chuck & MT2 arbor from RDG Tools which improved the accuracy of the machine quite considerably.

I was going to use my Clarke chuck on my Progress 2G, but it was way off true. I got one from RDG which was far better, came with arbor and key.

Both Morse & Jacobs are, supposed, to be self-holding tapers.
I agree that the taper in the picture posted looks like a JT.
Size I would not like to guess, but, I would not say that the poster above is wrong either.
For cheap "OK" tooling I have used both RDG & ArcEuroTrade, so for DIY they are fine.
Many larger units also used JT, though you would not perhaps be aware, as they were bigger, they were more expensive, more accurate and better made, thus, they didn't tend to fall apart, so you never saw the JT!
I've seen JT's on 5/8" & 3/4" industrial 3 jaw drill chucks.

The 13mm refers to the maximum drill diameter the chuck will take, J33 is a Jacobs No33 taper.

The taper in the drill itself is an MT2 (Morse taper no2), the adaptor matches the two tapers so the chuck will fit the drill.
