Pillar drill accessories.

So as the title suggests, what tools and accessories should I be looking to buy for my Boxford pillar drill.
It's got an MT2 quill and a standard 13mm Jacob's chuck.
It's fitted with a 0.5hp motor so what's the max drilling capacity I should stuck to.
Is it possible to fit an X Y table instead of the tiny round table?
Would I be better with a keyless chuck, are the cheaper keyless chucks on eBay any good?
What should I be looking for when it comes to wear and tear when buying second hand MT2 drill bits.
Lastly the drill has a plaque stating regular oiling of the quill via the oil hole, the only hole i can find is in the front pulley which is opposite to the grub screw holding the pulley on.

My fobco 7 eight is mt2. And as the name suggests it's max capacity is 7/8. But it is so strong and sturdy it would probably drill a hole bigger. I bought a quick change chuck with mt3 collets so I can put a bigger drill in. It also goes down to 51rpm. But if you are drilling big holes make sure the work piece is clamped down properly!

Also as long as the second hand bits are good quality, like dormer for example you can sharpen them yourself.

if its a decent jacobs 13mm chuck I'd stick with that, mines still going strong after 25 years use. you could fit an x y table on the drill and use it for positioning the workpiece, but you wont be able to use if for milling

Positioning is all it would be used for but I was thinking for accuracy and fast locking with lots of adjustment.

it all depends on what you're planning on drilling, and cheap x y tables are usually rough in construction and notchy to use or lightweight and made of aluminium. you will be limited with the range of movement too. if the round table is too small for you, bolt either a plywood of steel plate to it. If I'm drilling something, I very rarely think about using my milling machine because its more accurate. when drilling holes in a drill the holes are normally near enough for most purposes.

What I did with mine was got a plastic rain water drain pipe clamp, 80mm which fits round the column of the drill (above the upper clamp, then I drilled a hole in tin can, then crewed that to the fixing of the drain pipe clamp I use that now for keeping the cutting oil bottle in it. Keeps it handy on the drill and out of the way at the same time. cost nothing...

another few wee tips, take a block of wood, and drill holes for the most common size drill to store those sizes that you will use all the time. 6, 8, 10 etc;. I fixed that on the wall just above the clamping fixtures set for the drill. I also have a plasticized chart of drill / tapping sizes on the wall. that way pretty much everything I need is right where I'm working. keeps life simple. That and a good work light. Seems I'm always struggling to see the job these days...

they do, but I think it's getting to a point it's more like binocularsavers....

mostly it's down to these progressive lenses I think..

Depends on many things. If you are drilling from solid, what will limit you first is the ability to hold the part from rotating. What will then limit you is the lowest speed the drill will turn at.

What material will you be drilling? What will you use to make the hole (twist drill, hole saw, annular cutter, trepanning tool)? How much pilot drilling will you do?

You can drill almost any size hole if you first drill a smaller hole.

As for accessories, a set of drill removal wedges would be good (MT1, 2 & 3). A male MT2 to female MT1 adaptor and a male MT2 to female MT3 adaptor are useful (check headroom on the latter). An MT2 to 3/4"/19mm weldon shank adaptor (Rotabroach adaptor) and MT2 to holesaw thread (1/2" 20 and 5/8 18) adaptors can be handy. Maybe think of a trepanning cutter (sometimes called a tank cutter).

A drill drift. For removing the morse taper from its socket. Something that can be made.

Sometimes called drill drifts. they are wedges for splitting morse taper adapters and drills apart as they take a good hold when pressed together. If you have an angle grinder cut your own from 6mm thick ms.

Thought it was that but ebay shows two tapered shims which go around the shank but I've seen a thread on here regarding shims.

That's what a morse drift looks like.

It's an incredibly complex bit of kit and it's best to buy one instead of making your own...

and if u make one use an old car spring cos a mild steel one can get stuck in and deform when u hit it
