Pigeon Sh*t on gas pipe

Thought I'd share this weld I spotted on site today! This is a gas pipe feeding a boiler in a school! I'm not one for knocking someone else's work, but this is unacceptable. I'd expect to see this from an apprentice in a college bay. Not on a live gas main in service.

I'm assuming it has, as it's been there for many years. Still a terrible weld, that shouldn't be passed off just looking at it!

No I agree - I was just musing that at least it has hopefully passed some kind of functional test but totally agree - it looks worse than something I would do!!

It was probably done in a time before all the certs and it was a choice of looking good or having the heating working on a cold November morning...i know what i would of picked with my blue dripping nose if i was the head teacher at the time

in some cases the gas is taken from the main into a tamperproof valve,usualy witnessed ndt and subject to full audit to p1 or p2 spec by an appointed inspector

THEN SOMETIMES an h vac fitter takes over bangs the fittings hard together with no root gap and welds them up ,its only low pressure mate, millibar,in fact ive heard it so many times,no ndt visual or anything as long as it holds the test pressure for x minutes,then slap on the ochre ,not any harder to do the job properly
gap it and root it i would insist on 100 percent visual ,10 percent random x ray and 100 percent mpi, and qa audit thats the norm up here

While not wanting to give any praise to the weld there must be many thousands of welds just like that in and around industrial/ commercial sites.
Probably done on site in position 30 years ago with a oxford with around 6 power settings.
Used to see things like that often, we forget how far things have progressed with inverters and auto darkening masks.

that'll have been done pre inverter, with a buzzbox on 50 + meters of lead in the dark and cold. with a fixed shade mask

What's all this about pre inverter days being a whole heap of trash? Never heard such tosh plenty of good welds and good sets available back in the 50s etc.
The only thing that has changed is diy sets and small portable sets have moved on massively.
You don't really need adjustable arc force, anti stick electronic monitoring systems etc if you can really do the job.
The weld shown is by a chancer simple as that, he could as well be using the very best set or a pile of junk.
