Picked this beauty up today

Im a bit late on to this thread, and birghtspark has said what I was gonna say

Don't really ever need to change the oil, its quite nasty and never ever goes wrong.

I know we all have a habit of opening things (myself included) but soemthings are just best left alone

Its a bomb proof bit of kit that you could weld a ship with. I have one, same conditions as yours but badged T I C and painted blue

my brother just found the bill out for buying the 2 pickill welders we bought after rewiring a house to pay for them. time and price seem to have faded on me they cost £122each and are 40 years old so I must have got it when I was 26

It was alot of money at that time. Did ye buy direct from pickhill at that time. Just goes to show how well they were built

we could have bought them direct of pickhill as there only 30 miles away but they wouldn't sell them cheaper than a dealer in Darlington wadkins farm and tool supplies. a bit of hard negotiation for 2 and got a tenner of each . tight gits

Oh I intend to IV a few days welding to do for a man so it will be put straight to work

Back together and ready to work . Just waiting for 20 ft leads to come . I won't be putting it on a trolly as the shed is big enough to get anything I want into it so put the welder up on some timber to keep it off the ground or would a rubber mat be better

That looks like a great bit of kit...we had one on a ship I was working on and it was rough as a rough thing ...but spark it up and the welds were smooth easy peelers ...lovely to use ...I was once told the oil in them is nasty stuff containing PCBs that are highly carcinogenic...is this true ? ...Parm ..

the very early ones used pcb in the oil for better cooling . then it was banned as its carsergenic its no big deal even if u get it on your hands u just wash it off. literally thousands of transformers have it in even on ships .just not good for someone working on them on a daily basis if they do they wear all the protective gear u will find old capacitors have it in them on old fluorescent lighting and sodium fittings

It is a lovely welder . I'm delighted with it . I have the chance of buying another one it's 250 amp Oxford it's as clean as that one I don't know what to do . I have another one that a friend gave me it's spotless I have it left up . The 250 amp is tempting me

Just out of interest how many liters of oil should be in the welder it says on the rateings plate transformer oil capacity 23liters I think roughly there's 20 in it

3 ltrs is neither here nor there probably make it drop 1/8 th of an inch in the box
