@normspanners seeing your post about 6R4, I recently scanned some rallying photo's, do you recognise any of them?.

Even 4 wheel drive needs assistance sometimes...

Think this was a later conversion of a MkII?

I remember the 6R4, a lad i knew had one, fancy body work on a bog standard car

When I think of a 6r4 I think of Will Gollop. Nutcase with 700hp .

The factory ones were superb and they tried to follow the ethos of Lancia by attaching non structural body components so if they became damaged they could simply be ripped off and replaced.

thats Toivonen's from rac after an 'off' have done some grovelling around under that one !! the homologation cars bodywork was fiberglass the real ones were carbon fibre and b*****s to fit, no two parts were the same ! the powersteering ran off the front propshaft so you only had powersteering when driving at speed

I went down and stripped the last ones of this lot down at the factory (I still have what is left of the massive box of unf bolts left over in my garage!!) to bare shells for parts before the group b job was scrapped coz we were given the job of running the successful ones and needed the bits

Interesting reading Norm, the prototype that I saw was white. That must of been early eighties. Interesting times for you being involved with the running and development of the 6r4

if only you had tucked one away great thread thanks i put the picture of all the cars lined up on me face book page people will be interested in that.
I met a chap Bob Green an ex girling R&D man he developed the brakes for that car.

The 6R4 was a beast had 2 friends who ran them 1 was a hire firm other another a garage owner.
Never had much to do with them though, there was a lot of weird happening at ST around that time

Well actually.....It was also Interesting for you to post, with your handle, I have a guy that has a prototype lotus that uses the 6r4 running gear that needs rebuilding it is there sitting under a wrap in the barn at the moment I havnt seen it as yet.

Anyone remember the Ted Toleman and Barry Lee Paris Dakar car ? 6R4 with a V8 and longer wheelbase.

In France, the R-E-D prepared car of Didier Auriol (despite a couple of early retirements) won five of the qualifying rounds to win the 1986 French National Championship on a tie-break! In the UK (and Ireland) the Metro 6R4 recorded its first international rally victory when David Llewellyn won the 1986 Circuit of Ireland Rally, against some much-fancied tarmac experts. Add to this numerous other rallies at all levels and it is clear to see that the Metro 6R4 was the car to have at every level except the top echelon - winning a total of 5 championships during the 1986 season.

IIRC the evolution 6r4 had 12+ ish I know you were knackered on the jack by the time it was high enough to get the stands in !!
