Its not just this forum but the default reply to any question of this type is "gimp"

I was just pointing out its actually pretty terrible software.

If I could find a cheap or free alternative to Lightroom I'd switch but nothing comes close, takes a bit of time tagging and rating photos as you import but worth it, as my photos are searchable in any way you could imagine

But you also state you didn't take the time to learn to use it properly.

Hardly fair comparing it to a software you've been using for a decade.

It has been years since I've used GIMP and I do agree that it isn't very, umm, aesthetic! Yes, for someone in your case it is worth the cost for quality software. As I work in education I get access to the Serif suite for free, not that we use all of it, including the new Affinity suite - which I gather is quite potent.

I'm intrugued by Seashore that @Gritineye has mentioned but his link shows only an OSX version and we don't know whether @Parm has a PC or a Mac.

I tried but the underlying software is just rubbish. Even really simple stuff like turning a photo black and white except for a colour splash is painful and tedious

I was for a period 100% Linux so really really tried to like gimp, its the reason I went back to Windows

How long ago was this.

It's a constantly evolving and improving program.

Although it went out of support years ago (thank you soo much Mr Google, who acquired the company and then closed it down), I have stayed loyal to Picasa, which is fairly basic, but very easy to use. Running it happily on W10 32 bit. I have the original software well backed up, but I'm fairly certain it can still be found on the web.

Affinity Photo - basically Photoshop for £30. Not free but close. You need to put the time in to learn any of them. Been on Photoshop about 20 years, I think I know about 20% of its capabilities.

Plus 1 for Affinity Photo (and Affinity designer).
They are often on half price offers and a three month trial.

In fact I think the offer is on now.......well worth the Money as it's a life time licence.

Edit. Just checked and yes it's now £23.99 and £9.99 if you want it on an iPad.
The 90 day free trial is also on now.

I have thousands of photographs, going back twenty years. I have them ordered in years, mostly and sometimes months within the year folders. I really would like to organise them, batch organising would be good. If anyone could suggest something I would be grateful. I currently use Fotosizer to batch process for the web but it is not powerful. I have used Irfanview but that would be ten years ago, has it come on much since then?

Used to use Photoshop back in the day but didn't learn it as I only needed a few of it's features.

PhotoScape for me http://www.photoscape.org/ps/main/index.php There are two versions, bog standard PhotoScape or PhotoScape X. Not sure what the X version is/does. I only use the bog standard V3.7. Been using it for years. Nice simple and FREE.
I also use MS Picture Manager 2003 for a few things, like rotating pictures and cropping. PhotoScape will do those as well, but I use Picture Manager as my day to day viewer so find it easier do that kind of thing there first and PhotoScape for anything else.

^^ thanks for that, I used to use photoscape years ago and loved it, then I updated it and came with no free version available, so I uninstalled it.

Looks like they've decided that was a mistake so I'll give it another go. the X version is for Mac IOS.
