my money would be on the focus, i`ve had 2001 a 2.0 petrol ghia in the past full kit in it, but, very,very crap on mpg (26-28), the 1.6 was miles better for mpg, but great to drive and handle and was reliable,
had a pug 306 1.9 diesel non turbo, nice car holds road well but boy it was slow, mpg was very good and again that was reliable, but focus had the edge for style comfort
punto never had one, the only italian piece of crap i ever had was an iveco van, had it 6weeks glad it went,had to have one on hire also for a couple of weeks, it did more miles on the tow truck than its own wheels, it was`nt old either

Focus all the way, if I had to choose.

Punto's eat headgaskets, or the Mrs' did.
Any french HDi is a good call, better than anything Italian to be honest.

On a side note, I also had an Iveco. Ate through diesel pump seals no end, and threw them into the piston bores, causing no end of problems.

i go to 2 different car auctions quite often, i dont see many focus`s around the year your looking at going thro, but do see the pug quite often, in fact at least one each time i go, not to say its cut and dry but it tells me something

it will mostly come down to comfort and quietness whilst driving, I hate normal cars that are loud to drive, like the megane is since changing the cat. comfort is important, I spend quite a bit of time driving, and after that economy

comfort will come down to the individual, i`ve got a picasso now and i find that more comfy than any car i`ve had , the reason being the driving position and easy access in and out and vision ,its not quiet thou being a diesel, this proberly comes from driving hgv`s and vans for too long as the picasso is slightly higher than most cars, fuel wise she`s good 40+ running around and 50+ on runs

If you go for a diesel try and avoid dual-mass-flywheels, expensive pieces of junk in my opinion that fail far too soon, don't know if petrols have them as well ?

By default diesels have dual mass fly wheels for smoothness these days, shouldn't be a problem unless you like riding the clutch.

You can't compare a focus to a 306 they were developed ages apart.

Focus are good cars non the less.

For the record my wifes 207 1.6 hdi diesel never does less than 50mpg and 70mpg isn't impossible.

Never had one, just replaced a few that had failed with under 50k miles on the clock. Come on, let's be honest a clutch/flywheel should be good for 100k absolute minimum and more like 150k unless abused.

The eolys you speak of is another name for this AdBlue crud.

It will soon be in force across the diesel range, if the EU have anything to do with it..

Its nothing like Adblue. Adblue is an SCR after treatment which acts directly on exhaust gasses. Eolys is to help the DPF clear accumulated soot without post injection to raise the DPF temp.

can't get cement mixer in the back still say a old 940 volvo estate will do all he wants apart from fuel economy maybe 30mpg
but for comfort low noise etc being able to drive all day without getting out crippled

Funnily enough, my missus' 207 1.9d has just decided it doesn't like holding water anymore. Pin hole in the core plug, not really sure how much it will cost to fix, or even if I am prepared to chuck any more money at it. Generally been a bag of turds.

Looking at some hyundai's and kia's as replacements - seem to be generally good and reliable.

Replacing a core plug is dead easy, getting to it can be the problem, you might get lucky and can replace it in-situ or you might end up having to pull the engine out.

I dunno about hyundai but I wouldn't touch a kia with the proverbial 10 foot pole, my trouble is I tend to like cars based on how they drive, how easy they are to work on and how reliable they are. My current car is a 2.4 non turbo MK3 Hilux pickup and everything Topgear says about them is true, you just can't kill them, believe me I've tried shame it's slow and only gets a maximum of 30 to the gallon. It's okay to drive, piece of p*ss to fix and hardly ever goes wrong.

my father had a mk 2 2.4 hilux, it was exactly as you say, indestructible in every way. the only problem he had with his was the head gasket went twice, but he used to hammer it everywhere. oh and a chav in a 206 scuffed the bull bar on the pick up, whilst also totally writing his pug off lol

True about the hilux...i have had a lot of small pick up trucks..best on being a Vauxhall brava 2.8 diesel...but with most of em they suffer from rear chassis rail rot...kia is a no go..a right f to work on..out of all the cars i have had..the best being a volvo 240 glt..easy to work on..strong..just a good ol motor..

I have a 206 diesel, first diesel car I've owned (but I've had countless vans) I bought it as I was travelling the country doing surveys. However 20k, one service and some tyres it's still going strong, just passed an mot with no problems.

I never expected to keep it over a year, but with the car and fuel allowance from my last job it effectively owes me nothing, still gets 40mpg around town and economical driving was never my thing
